-- Mystery Application "K" won't uninstall???? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=13411)

Posted by iDazzler on 03-25-2001 03:03 AM:

Out of the blue, I've got this application called "K" on my Visor. It's got an icon and when I execute it it just runs a blank screen and returns me back to my Launcher. I've tried to delete it but the Palm OS comes back with the "Unable to delete K." message.

I've looked in my system and specifically in the palm/backup directory but their is no trace of this app. Should I just go for the big bad hard reset or is there a way to can "K"?

Thanks in Advance Gang.

Try doing a Warm reset, and than deleting it. I have no clue what the app is, but doing a Warm reset, makes it so it's not running. (You can't delete a running program).

Thanks miradu2000 but still no luck. K lives on...

You might try using Z'Catalog to delete it. I've had some luck using it with fussy apps.

Thanks for the info Rob, but still no luck. Z'Catalog is very useful though. Appreciate your input.

K still lives...

Go into Z'Cat, find K, tap on the creator column for it and then tap the creator column heading and resort by creator. See if you can find what app owns it. You can also look up the creator ID at
http://www.palmos.com/dev/tech/palmos/creatorid/

Alternate:
Backup everything (BackupBuddy or such). Take K out of the backup folder on PC. Hard reset Visor. Reinstall everything with BackupBuddy. 'course if K is needed by an app, might get recreated or crash the app.

Thanks for your advice ss@rr,

Unfortunately, "K" never shows up in Z'Cat. I'm going to probably just end up doing a Hard Reset on my Visor.

I'm a relative newbie to the Palm OS world, but already I'm on my second unit. My first unit just flat out could not get out of the digitizer initialization one day. Handspring blamed it on 3rd party software.

Recently my new unit would go bezerk and whenever I would click on one thing the click would be way off. Again a 3rd party issue.

I just don't feel I have any control over my device. This "K" thing is one of the many crazy things that have happened to me. In Handspring's tech guy's own words "Your Visor is not intended to support 3rd party applications".

If that is the case then why did I shell out $449 for my Visor? I may as well go back to my 1988 Casio with 32KB..

For what it's worth, I have "K" on my Visor, too. I have no idea when it got there and what it's for. It may have something to do with a third-party app that we are both running. I don't have a solution, unfortunately. I just wanted you to know that you aren't the only one who's got it.

That is one of the most brain-damaged statements I've ever heard. Hasn't he heard the expression "Infinitely Expandable"?

Thanks for the support guys. It's comforting to know that I'm not alone in this and that some of us share the same views.

Thanks again.

Double check. I do not have Z'Cat at the moment, but do have some similar programs on my device (Filez, RsrcEdit). I assume Z'Cat sorts the files, as do the others. In which case, do not just look between the J's and L's, but also look at the very top and very bottom of the list. It could be that there is a space or other special character in "K"'s file name.

Hmm, just thought of another possibility. The application name is not necessarily the same as the file name. The application name is the name displayed under the icon and in the info and delete dialog boxes. For example: Date Book Plus's file name is "DateBookPlus", but it's application name is "Date Book+"; Album To Go version 2.0's file name is "ATG20" but its application name is "AlbumToGo". Does Z'Cat let you see the application name? Filez does not, but one can get at it in RsrcEdit. To do this in RsrcEdit, one would have to open all files of type "appl" (Applications), and then look for the resource of type "tAIN" (type Application Icon Name), number 1000.

Thanks Potter,

I appreciate your input. You're probably right about the name though. It probably does not go under the name "K" even though it shows up as "K" in the app launcher. I did try Filez and no luck.

I also tried getting Mega Launcher II and seeing what that could do. It turns out that I can temporarily remove "K" unfortunately as soon as I exit MegaLauncher, it appears in the Palm OS Launcher.

My next attempt was to rename "K" via MegaLauncher and again it looks good but leave MegaLauncher and "K" still shows up as "K". Return to MegaLauncher and File as new name is there as new name.

Weird, but I've decided to get to the bottom of this one and not take the Hard Reset solution.

I fixed this exact problem by opeing the case, disconnecting the battery for a few seconds, and then reconnecting the battery. Also fixed a charging problem (see recent post) using this exact same method.

BTW, I have no idea where "K" came from, but I support the idea of backing everything up, deleting K from the backup, and then doing a hard reset and restore. Good luck

Posted by MoKoni on 03-30-2001 02:48 PM:

I just checked my backup directory and "K" is there. I checked the properties and it says K.PDB is a palm database file. I haven't tried deleting it, though, because I don't have my visor with me (I accidentally picked up my husband's visor instead of my own). I found the file under C:\Palm\LC\Backup.

Do you have a memory module by chance? I wonder if it would show up in the File Mover and if it could be deleted that way. I have one in my visor (at home), but I haven't checked to see if it can be detected from the module.

This is rather humorous for me because I have always wondered what "K" was but could never figure it out. It never bothered me until now. Now I feel like I am on your mission with you to figure this out.

Posted by potter on 03-30-2001 03:00 PM:

Note: If it is indeed a problem with not being the save as the file name, you may have a problem with the full-backup and hard-reset method. This is because the backup uses the Palm filename, and not the application name, as bases for the backup file host computer name. Thus, do the full backup, and then look for the application that is "K" before performing the hard-reset.

Mega Lanucher puts thing in a Trash Bin. YOu have to empty the trash. to get rid of it.

Hmm... maybe K is a file of the Palm OS launcher. That would explian a lot.. but than why don't others have that file? (I mean like A LOT of others)

It sounds like it would be a worthwhile effort for MoKoni and iDazzler to compare what software they have installed. That would quickly narrow it down to a few overlapping programs, at which point you could selectively uninstall and reinstall each of the suspects and see what happens.

For what it's worth Gang here's the list of installed 3rd party Apps:
( I hope you guys like my taste in apps... :}~~ )

ActionNames
AlbumToGO
Avantgo
BugMe
Convert-It
FAFileMover
Filez
FireViewer
Mail+
MegaDoc
MegaLauncher
PalmSafe
VegasSlots

I suspect FAFileMover or BugMe to be the culprits...

Thanks everyone for your input
