-- Battery meter hack CRASH! (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=2918)

Red face

Thought it would be cool to have the battery meter hack with the % display of battery life so downloaded the battery hack, found it in Hack Master, checked the box next to it and clicked "reset"...must have been the wrong thing to do. My Visor emitted a low squeal for several seconds and now is non- responsive. All I get is the "Palm Computing Platform" display, can't do a soft reset, can't turn the Visor off. Suspect I'll have to do the dreaded hard reset.

Wonder what I did wrong, any comments?

Not sure, doesn't sound too good though. I've heard somewhere that there are problems with the hack.

I use Launcher III, Uptime and Runtime instead. The three do a great job keeping me on top of my battery situation.

Try a WARM Reset... hold the UP button while turning on the Visor. This will reset the Visor without any data loss and prevent any hacks from loading. You can then delete the offending hack, do a SOFT reset, and hopefully you'll be back in business.

FWIW, I've been using Battery Meter Hack v1.2 by Till Harbaum without any trouble on my Visor since day one.

MarkEagle,
Tried to do the "warm" reset you suggested but my Visor on/off button isn't functional. All I have is "Palm Computing Platform" displayed and no response from any buttons or soft reset. Thanks for the suggestion...I'd sure like to avoid a hard reset but am not optomistic.

BobK,

You can also hold the UP button while pressing RESET with a paper clip (or other similar blunt item) on the back of the Visor to perform the WARM reset... you don't need the power button which is inactive when the Visor is locked up.

MarkEagle,
You da man!
It took 4 tries at a warm reset as you described but my Visor is humming again. Thanks

It isn't a Battery Meter Hack problem. To activate a Hack, just check the box in HackMaster and it's active. Tap the little battery meter icon at the top of the launcher screen to set prefs for the hack.

I'm not sure why HackMaster has a reset button anyway; maybe to address the "chunk over-locked" problem mentioned in previous posts by providing a convenient way to soft-reset?

Couldn't leave well enough alone. Went back to the battery meter hack and tried to set preferences. (Touching the battery icon did nothing) In hack master removed the check mark from the battery meter hack and got a FATAL ERROR message:

MemoryMgrNew.c,
Line:4866, Chunk
under-locked

and then a reset button which doesn't respond. Looks like I'm back to a soft, warm, or hard reset. And to H... with the battery meter hack.

This might be the HackMaster "bug"... if you invoke HackMaster more than 15 times, it will give a FATAL ERROR... has something to do with HackMaster and/or the OS itself and the way database records are "locked". A SOFT reset usually cleans this up (until the 16th following activation of HackMaster).

Don't give up yet! By the way, are you using the same version of Battery Meter Hack (v1.2 by Till Harbaum)? I think there was another hack by the same or similar name out there.

Yes, I have v1.2 of the Battery Meter. And I don't know about using Hack Master more than 15 times. Battery Meter is the only Hack app I have. Today's crash occurred the first time I went into Hack Master and removed the check mark from in front of Battery Meter. And it took a "warm" reset to become functional again, a "soft" reset did not work.

Right now I have a check mark in front of Battery Hack, the only options in Hack Master are "uninstall all" and "reset", and the battery icon on the apps screen is only a battery. It seems that if I do anything with Battery Meter, my Visor crashes. I have not been able to find a "preferences" assoc with Battery Meter.

When I do get a reset, I have an Easter Egg in the lower right corner of the preferences screen but I don't imagine that could be interfering with Battery Meter Hack.

Thanks for your suggestions but it looks as if this isn't meant to be.

Ok... last resort and then I give up...

I'm thinking you have a corrupted file or something... Try downloading another copy of Battery Meter Hack. Uninstall the copy on your Visor (remember it needs to be disabled in HackMaster before you can delete it). Then install the new copy and try it.

I found that I could not remove the checkmark from Battery Meter in Hack Master to disable it without locking up and getting the above error message. (This also happens with clicking uninstall and reset)
So I deleted Battery Meter from the apps list but when I went back to Hack Master there was an "unknown" hack listed. This had to be some remnant of Battery Meter because I had no other hacks. So I deleted Hack Master and will start from scratch later. This was one tenacious little corrupted file. Thanks for the suggestions.

The "unknown hack" was Battery Meter Hack. You couldn't uncheck (deactivate) the hack in the HackMaster screen, and you deleted it in the regular app delete way, so HackMaster thinks it's still there but can't find it in the installed apps database. A soft reset may cure that; it happened to me in the Palm OS Emulator and that's what I did. Failing that, delete and reinstall HackMaster...

By the way, I'm using Battery Meter Hack 1.2 by Till Harbaum, and it gives me no problems. (Oddly, in the Menu/Info screen, it shows up as version 1.1, but in HackMaster when I tap the ? button, it says 1.2, OS 3.0/3.1.)
