Unhappy WinXP Crash w/ Visor or Prism HotSync

I've got what I think is a WinXP problem:
2 years ago for Christmas I got my first PDA, a Handspring Visor DeLux ... installed the Win software on my old PC (Win98) & it HotSync's just fine for a year. Last year for Christmas I got a new PDA, a Handspring Prism (love that color) .... installed the software & both the Visor & the Prism HotSync'ed just fine many times until my old PC died (power supply; haven't had time to replace it yet). So we bought a new PC this past summer (WinXP Home edition), installed the Palm software (twice) & after a bit of work the 2 PDAs both have HotSync'ed fine for the rest of the year.

Last week for Christmas I got a new PDA, (see a pattern here? My partner says I've become a gadget freak ... "She who dies with the most toys wins?") a Palm Tungsten E (love it) ... I installed the Palm Desktop software & the Tungsten HotSync's just fine but when I try to HotSync either of the older 2 Handsprings the XP says it sees new hardware and does a HARD SHUTDOWN ! Arrrgh !!! I've wasted my whole Christmas vacation troubleshooting this &*^%$%^* thing (sorry, I'm just a very frustrated old lady).

So I de-installed EVERYTHING and started over. Installed the Handsping Visor's software 1st & it HotSync's OK. Then installed the Handspring Prism's software over that, both now HotSync OK. Then installed the Tungsten E's software over that ... again, Tungsten HotSync's OK but when I try to HotSync either Handspring my PC crashes HARD.

Any ideas? I've tried all the helpfull hints in Handsprings & Palms FAQs & I'm out of ideas ... Help.

Sounds like an incompatibility with the HotSync software for the Tungsten. Most likely the Handspring USB drivers are getting overwritten. Will the Tungsten sync with the Handspring version?

You can try uninstalling everything (again... sorry), then install the Tungsten software first, followed by the Handspring.

Lightbulb resolution ... sort of (sigh)

Handspring tech support just got back to me with the flat out statement that the 2 are not compatible so I have 2 choices ... fix my old PC & have the Handsprings HotSync to that ... or partition one of the HDs on my new computer so it boots as 2 computers.
Does anybody know if there is a Handspring Desktop for Unix? I've been thinking about creating a Unix partition as I'm starting to have to use Unix at work & could use the practice working in it.
