Question Edge Backlight Broken... Now it works..?

Edge owners:

Anyone have this experience?

I just received my Visor Edge yesterday. I tested the backlight out soon after receiving it, to find that it did not work. I compared it side-by-side to the Backlight on my Visor Deluxe, and in the same lighting conditions, and the backlight definitely was not activating on the Edge. So, I called Handspring and they are sending a replacement to me.

HOWEVER later last night, I was watching a movie in a darkened room, and decided to try the backlight again for giggles. What do you know, the backlight turned on and worked just fine! Now it works all the time.

Has anyone had this experience of the backlight not working at first, and suddenly deciding to work later?

I am going to stress-test it by keeping it in its cradle and keeping the backlight on all the time today at work...

My Edge has always worked properly. *knocks wood* The backlight is light years better than my old Deluxe's was. Luck of the draw I suppose. Sorry to hear that yours is being flaky. Was it purchased direct from Handspring or a retailer? Hope your replacement works right.

I purchase my Visor Edge direct from the Handspring website. I think that if the Edge passes today's backlight stress-tests, I'll keep it, and return the replacement that's being shipped to me.

Thus far, for each 3-minute period of ontime today, the backlight has worked fine.

On a related note, is there any way to get the Visor to *not* turn off?

No. You have to soft reset.

When I first bought my Edge the backlight didn't work. I can't say whether or not it would have eventually worked or not since I immediately took it back and swapped it for one with a working backlight.

Maybe you got my old one.

AlwaysOn?

You could try that, and not have to reset...

Should I send it back anyway?

Well, the replacement Visor Edge is here from Handspring. My initial thought is to simply return the replacement since the original seems to be working fine now. Does anyone think that it would be better to send it back anyway, and keep the replacement? Other thoughts?

Peter

Tough call. I'd probably keep the replacement, but I don't see how returning the other could do much good, as it'll work when they get it, but then again I might keep the original just to avoid getting a refurb. Like I said, tough call.

I don't know man...I'd be hesitant to keep the old one if it has shown a propensity for being less than fully-functional...although, you really don't know what you're getting with the new one. If I were you, I'd play with the new one for about a week before you send either back. (Handspring gives you two weeks before they charge your CC, don't they?)

On a sidenote, I just bought another edge, took it home, charged it overnight, turned it on yesterday morning...and VOILA! No backlight. Back to the store from whence it came. I even had to argue with the Future Shop salesman that the damn thing was supposed to have a backlight in the first place! Although the new one seems to be working fine so far...I just can't shake the ominous feeling that something is going to go really wrong when I need it most.

I don't know about this edge thing. Now I know why I went back to the Prism in the first place...

did they charge you to replace it or did they send other one free?

No, they sent the replacement Edge for free.

However, I think I am going to just go ahead and send back the replacement, as the original has been working fine now for a few weeks.

Just use it a day at a time. Read one of hog's panegyrics if you need inspiration.
