I have set the internal volume to max but for someone rapidly approaching senility like me the volume is just too quiet for a busy office. Does anyone know a way to boost the volume or maybe a springboard module that will do the same?

On my old Palm 1000, you could drill some holes near the speaker to make the sound louder. I don't know if that would work on a Visor, though.

Another trick is to use an app like GEEKSOUNDS, which gives you a bunch of, say, themes from movies.
While they are not "louder," some of them go on and on for a loooooong time.
Mine's set for the "Mission Impossible" theme, for ex., and while it seems even more faint than the ordinary Visor alarm, I never fail to hear it -- both because it's so distinctive, and it virtually always outlasts any other ambient noise that might otherwise interfere w/my hearing it. Hope it helps.
The new Visor Edge is reputed to have an ACTUAL SPEAKER -- though no one's verified this 100% to my satisfaction.
And of course the new color Sony Clie (only for Japan for now) even plays music -- but maybe only w/headphones (anyone know for sure?).
Both are about $400, I believe.

Thanks for the advice! I have done that and now understand. As it means dismantling and rewiring etc. I had better wait until the warranty has expired or there is a 3rd party hardware solution. I appreciate the information :-) Thank you.

Slightly off-topic, but

Stablehand -

if you really want a Palm OS handheld that has a loud speaker, think about the TRGPro. It has a mono speaker
that can actually play DTMF tones, and can be heard from
greater than 2 to 3 inches away!

The speaker volume was something I was greatly unhappy with on my VDX. I found out afterward about the TRGPro, and the
price on them has been dropping quickly (still more expensive than a VDX) but its another option. It comes with a built in CF card reader (most all CF cards work with it - not just memory) and was designed for a more industrial/IT applications use. The form factor is Palm III, and it looks like a graphite visor with a slight bulge on the back.

Alarm Volume

Get a freeware application called BigClock. Install Bigclock and go to its preferences. Inside this alarm, you can set preferences for pitch of the tone and the number of repeats as well as volume. By changing the tone to multiples of C (512 MHz), and by adding in repeats you can get a forceful (woke me from my Bulmer's induced sleep last summer in Ireland) alarm. Nice big numbers and multiple alarm settings.

Hey, has anyone thought of getting that insurance for $3-5 a month and then moding the Visor? Then if you break it it's about $30 to get a new one. Maybe worth it if you can get all the mods working

There is a shareware app called alarmmaster or something that lets you customize alarms. You could make them as long as you like, that way. It wouldn't be louder, but it would increase the changes of being heard.

There's always a vibrating alarm springboard, too.

Visor Deluxe volume

I too had the same problem, due to high frequency loss. I couldn't hear the alarms at all.
I bought the InnoPak/2V vibrator module ... problem solved. It vibrates like a pager, and I can even hear the vibrator as it is at a lower frequency.

Made all the difference for me.
