Ok, this is going to sound REALLY stupid, but I must ask the most basic question concerning the use of a visor modem.

Let's say for argument sake, someone (not me of course...it's a friend of mine...yeah, that's it, a friend) wanted to access AOL email and the internet. They're sitting there with the modem in and connected to a phone line. Now what?

What are the basic skills/knowledge/software/information that this obviously ignorant person would need to know? I'm asking for a friend...really...I am.

You can try AOL's mail program for the Palm OS... AOL Keyword: Anywhere

Another option would be to get a web browser for the Visor (ProxiWeb comes to mind) and get your AOL mail from their web site.

Thanks for your reply. With the web browser, how do I connect to the internet? In other words, what number would I be dialing? Is Proxiweb an ISP with several callup numbers? Will I be spending more money to connect with my visor because I have to sign up with another ISP?

Just kidding. I think you may need something like proximail, or some kind of application to manage the mail. I know there have been some discussions about the fact that there is no support for web based e-mail, but my guess is it will be ok for AOL. I get my e-mail by dialing up my network at work, and having my PC's software set to to "sync mail." But, I assume you want to connect directly to the internet, without dialing your pc. You will need to go to the hotsync application on your handheld, and set up the netwok. That's the first box under the "Modem sync" icon. Fill in the appropriat info, then connect the phone line and hit modem sync. You will note that there is a pull down menu for the various services. I have created a custom one for my local ISP. Looking at the list, I don't see one already set up for AOL, so you may need to create a custom one.

After you have connect to the service, you should be able to use proximail to get your mail. I have never used it, so I can't give more detail. I know from my own experience that with Proxiweb, I can browse the internet, once connected to my ISP in this fasion. You may want to get that software as well.

With the AOL Anywhere software you actually dial into AOL directly (there might be a surcharge... read the fine print). To use ProxiWeb, you will need an ISP (I'm not sure if AOL can be used as an ISP or not...)

You can create a custom service under the network settings in the hotsynch application. You can fill out the information so that it will dial whatever number you want. Just tell it to dial the same number that your PC dials when connecting regularly. You can also tell it to remember your password. Once this is set up, just select this as your service, and hit "modemsync"

You could sign up for a freei.net account (free dialup net access) and use that for web browsing. But it wouldn't work with your AOL Mail account (because AOL doens't use regular POP3)....

FYI, you can't use AOL Anywhere as an ISP.

Like the others have said. If you just want to check your email get AOL mail from AOL. Keyword Anywhere.

If you want to surf the web, check pop 3 mail, update avantgo, or any other internet stuff, you will need an ISP.

Freei.net will not work with the Visor, it requires you to view pop-up ads. The only free internet that does not require pop-up ads (That I know of) is www.freewwweb.com.
