I'm curious if it comes with a speaker or not. I would like to be able to add funny event sounds, like with the PalmPilots

Thumbs down

From what I've read, the mike is for future springboards that are developed lice cell phones, etc., and the speaker will be in the module.

You know, it seems to me that every time someone introduces a new product, they make at least one real 'bonehead' decision. In the case of the Visor, that is the lack of a speaker (or at least a headphone jack). There is definitely space for one, and it would have added - what? - maybe fifty cents to the cost of the unit? I would gladly have laid out an extra ten bucks for it.
As it is, the Visor is mute unless you plug in a Springboard with audio capability. This relates to product 'personality' which is ever so much more important than product 'utility' in selling units. I'm buying one anyway, just because it's so cool and it isn't Microsoft.

Since the Visor has an alarm capability, you can be assured that it can make sounds. Just like it's cousins the PalmPilot.

Well, if you look at the specs, you'll notice that it does indead come with a little speaker inside just like the palm series. If you mean a stero type speaker then no, it doesn't. For things like the cell phone module it comes with the speaker in it for you to hear, but the mic is on the Visor. So, basically it comes built in with the same speaker functionality as the Palm's.

While on the topic of speakers. Has anyone heard about anybody working on an advanced speaker springboard for the visor? It would be great to have the ability to dial phones from datebook or even just to have better alarms.

This alone would make me more interested in the Visor above the usual Palm suspects.

I beleive that the FCC has made an intelligent phone dialing tone generator like this illegal and has put a few people in jail for modifying the simple tone/address books.

I doesn't make a lot of sence when you look at what a laptop with builtin modem can do, but that's the government for ya.

re: autodialing.

I hope the FCC hasn't outlawed basic dialing, since then I've just gotten my brother in trouble by sending him an autodialing device: http://www.sharperimage.com/Product...mp;index=OnSale

It would be qool to have a Visor be able to do that kind of stuff, maybe minus the voice-activation.

Seems like the FCC should be ok w/ this, just so long as you don't do black box / Cap'n Crunch kinds of phreaking.

So yeah, let's have a Springboard that gooses the output options- speaker(s), headphone jack, hi-power IR, and vibra-alarm all in one. Maybe even throw in basic microphone capabilities. I'd buy one.

Oh yeah, and cell-phone blocking, too.... :-)

One more note about the microphone: I read in one of the many articles that the mic is directly wired to a pin on the Springboard port, so even though the unit has a built-in speaker, you can't use the mic with it.

Regarding an auto-dialer, I'm pretty sure that they're legal because I've seen several. I even saw one for a Palm on PalmGearHQ. It attached to the unit through the sync port. It was a good idea, but it's kind of bulky. A springboard that does the same thing would be great!
