-- Xircom's finally done it!! Springport 56! (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=7570)
In addition to the 56K rating and cellphone connection capabilities, the following factored into my decision to purchase the SpringPort Modem 56, despite the higher price:
It uses a standard phone jack for non-cellphone connections, unlike the thincom modem which requires a dongle.
It's certified for use in Japan and other non-U.S. countries that the Handspring and thincom modems are not certified for use in.
It doesn't draw power from the Visor batteries, unlike the thincom modem.
It is FAX capable, unlike the Handspring and thincom modems.
It also is bundled with Multi-mail, which I had planned to purchase anyway. A registered copy of Multi-mail alone costs $40.00, so the SpringPort Modem 56 already more than makes up for its $30.00 additional cost. Figure in the the cost of replacement dongles and time saved from having a faster connection, fax capabilities, a dependable power source and not having to upgrade from 34K and you are doing pretty well.
Xircom has changed their website for the Springport 56 modem. It now says they expect to ship in Sept. 2000, and they are taking pre-orders.
