Question

I'm having a problem launching the Palm Desktop program and syncing my
Handspring Visor to my desktop at work.

I should note that I'm having no problems syncing with my home computer, a laptop running Windows 98 connected via USB.

Basic scenario:
1. Working on a networked system running NT 4.0 Have cradle hooked to serial
port. Don't regularly have administrator privileges to install software, so
had to get an Information Systems guy to install it.
2. Went through the installation process, chose Outlook as the program to
Sync to (I use Outlook 98), and got message that installation was
successful. Was able to launch the Palm Desktop will logged on as the
administrator.
3. Then rebooted on my username, rather than the administrators. Now I can't
launch Palm Desktop, even though the shortcut item is on the screen. When I do, I get a message of "Invalid Configuration.
Terminating the Palm Desktop."
4. Also, when I try to sync with my Handspring, it comes back with the
message that it is unable to link up with my desktop, even though the cradle
is plugged into the available serial port.
5. My Information System folks say they don't support Palm Pilot software,
so I'm kind of on my own to sort out this problem.

Which means I need help.

A month ago I sent the following e-mail to Handspring, and still haven't
gotten a response. I've tried to reach technical support on the phone and
been stuck on never-ending hold.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

See in order to properly install it your network admin must grant you temp admin priveleges on your computer. You need to make sure that you uninstall the software first, then reinstall with yourself signed on with admin rights. After you install the software you can have them restore your original privileges.

Logon onto the machine locally with the administrative account.

Install the Palm software.

Log onto your regular account (without administrative capabilities).

Start a command prompt session.

Navigate to the Palm directory.

Run: hotsync -r

Now you should be copy the "Start" menu structure containing the Palm items from the Administrator's profile to your normal profile and ....

.... run the Palm desktop software. The "hotsync -r" will "rebuild" the registry entries necessary to run the software on your normal userid. This will eliminate the "invalid configuration" message you're currently receiving.

Good luck,
