-- Hard Reset Without Buttons (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=14568)
Hi,
The DateBook, Up and power buttons on my Prism has stopped working. I now need to take it back for replacement, seeing as it is only 2 weeks old. I want to do a hard reset to remove all my data, but with the power button not working, I can not do this in the tradional way.
Any Ideas?
Cheers
Richelo

Thanks for the reply.
Unfortuanatly, this is the prism, with rechargeable bateries.
I have taken ZCatelog, and just deleted everything that was not read-only.

Yip, tried the hard reset anyway, with no luck.
You could install "AlwaysOn" so the Prism would stay on all the time. Adjust your brightness to 100% and then let it set until the batteries go dead. This should wipe out all data. Same as taking out the batteries I would think.
AlwaysOn is free and you can get it from PalmGear. I use it on my Prism and love it. It allows you to set the Prism so it does not turn off automatically.
Good luck.

The only problem with GSR13's idea is that when the battery level drops low enough for the device to turn itself off, it probably still has enough juice to preserve the data for some time (days?, weeks?). I can't think of a better idea though.

OK maybe I do have an idea. You could change the hotsync name of your Prism - I think that there is a program that will do this. Then sync it, making sure there is no data in the backup directory (and since you changed the hotsync name, none of the data from datebook, address book etc would come over). I'm a little hazy on the details of how this would work but I think something along those lines would work.

this should work
I experienced two similar problems over the last couple of months with my Prism. Both times i was able to get it back to a "like-new" state by opening the case, removing the battery connection from the board for a few seconds, and then reconnecting the battery. It solved both problems immediately. This is not a hard procedure and there is no way for Handspring to know if the unit has been opened.
Hope this helps
Are you saying that you had the same problem with the buttons? If so, I wonder what gives.
In any case, I deleted all the data with ZCataLog, and got it exchanged at my local supplyer yesterday. Hopefully this will be the last time. I can not understand that a company like Handspring has such pathetic quality controls. You just have to look at all the problems posted by people with prism and edge machines. Maybe I should just go for the new sony or the handera, if this happens again.
Thanks for all the suggestions from you guys.
