One thing I do have to say is that at least Handspring's willing to admit their mistakes (unlike some *ahem* companies out there)... it's just a matter if they can learn from them and tough it out through the "tech slump" or whatever analysts are calling it now (damn analysts)...

Anyway, do you all think Handspring's going to use current technology to produce a thin color model, or do you think they'll wait until more advanced products (e.g. organic LEDs, etc.) become widely available? I thought I read a press release somewhere a while back that said after complaints of the m505's screen, Handspring was going to wait. Of course, with Sony's new model, a decent thin color screen may be feasible.

Does this mean that the TREO will be in color?
If they learn from the Edge mistake(s) they should make the Treo in color....
But than again with the cell phone capabilities the batterylife maybe would be too short (WinCE like )
Why can't we have the cake and eat it... I want it all.... etc. etc.

I completely agree, but will consumers be patient enough? One of the main reasons why I like Handspring and respect Hawkins, Dubinsky, and the rest of the Handspring team is because they (hopefully) try to develop handhelds that focus on the strengths of the Palm OS platform - simplicity and versatility. I considered purchasing the Edge or the Prism, but the prices of both models were unattractive to gain updated OS's, color, or a thinner form factor. I'm content with my Visor the way it is. The modules I have allow me to do a little bit of everything, and thanks to the efforts of Palm OS programmers, I'm able use "new" technology such as VFS and other programs which require OS versions higher than 3.1. Yes, I'm one of the many Visor customers who's waiting with baited breath for a thin color model, but I'm with dick in that I'm willing to wait until Handspring has a product that they're confident will adequately represent what they want in a product. I just hope consumer fickleness won't make Handspring do otherwise.

I just read James' article from his trip to Microsoft. He has a really good point. I hope I didn't give the impression that HS should be complacent. I'm just concerned that customer demands along with current limits on economical technology will result in conflicted development for the Handspring line. What I'd hate to see is HS trying to develop a device that tries to fulfill the desires of the "I want it all" consumer (hey, secretly who isn't?), but ultimately leaves previous Visor users in the dust (some of us none-Edge users are still concerned over the "Edge Connector" thing), or results in a collection of devices with little in common among them. Given the company's leadership, it's doubtful that this would happen, but then again, there are examples of good companies with good products having difficulty winning customers.

If HS doesn't build a device it is comfortable with in the next two months -- they'll miss the xmas selling period and might not be around next year --

Edge too expensive!

The Edge is too expensive at $299. The Edge would move at $250 or $200. HandSpring should never have introduced the Edge at $399. The Edge could have been a smash hit if introduced at the low end. HandSpring has never been able to sufficiently differentiate the Edge from the Palm Vx, Palm m105 and Palm m500. I definitely don't feel sorry for HandSpring.

HandSpring will have to do something spectacular to entice me to buy from them again. I like my Prism, but it's practically useless outdoors, even on overcast days. Color is nice to have, but 'always on' email is even better. The Treo intrigues me, but it lacks a SpringBoard slot. That being the case, I might as well look at Palm's upcoming wireless product and the MS Stinger as well.

HS has no need to differentiate the Edge from the M500 --the Edge is still cheaper-- albeit only about 10% -- and it's a better unit--
Though I do see a differentiation in the lack of a swell at the base and the option of a springboard slot.
