-- mounting bracket for Magellan/Visor combo (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=13973)
Just called Magellan's overly enthusiastic (not!) sales desk, and got an outrageous price of $42 for their custom suction cup mounting bracket for the Visor/Companion duo. It's probably 45 worth of plastic. Whatever!
So.... I do have this "universal" PDA suction cup bracket from Staples. Frankly, it doesn't hold the Visor all that securely to begin with, and since the Magellan SB sticks out about 1/2 inch it would take a bit of modification to make it work.
Has anyone come across a similar vehicle mounting bracket that would work with the Visor/Magellan combo?? A suction cup system is ideal, since I'll be transferring the Visor between my car and plane. Or, can you recommend a bracket along with a simple modification idea??
Any help is appreciated.

Here's an idea....
Yeah Sean,
If that Universal unit you are referring to is the same one that I picked up (two piece main unit screwed together with two side arms ratcheting towards the middle) one comes in the goose-neck model and another model pretty much attaches with double edge tape to a flat surface. If this is the case you are 40% there.
Separate the two halves of the main unit by removing the four or five screws that hold it together. Then take the traction surface on the inside (front) half and peel it down a little more than half way (this is the hardest part). Now with a hack saw cut the front half just above where the screws are located so that it would form a ledge around midpoint of the mounting bracket. Reconstruct the unit sans the top half of the inner (front) half of the main unit and reattach the foam rubber liner over the cut edge and up what was the inside of the back half of the main unit.
As added security you can attach a 1/2 inch piece of adhesive backed Velcro on the side of the Magellan module that isn't the battery hatch and the other piece on what the matching side of the bracket. For real rough situations a strap or rubber band around the top of the the Main unit and the Visor does the trick.
BTW: I posted this idea as a reply previously but have some trouble locating this previous thread.
Hope Ive been of some assistance.
Oh yes, important note: Be very careful about where you place this little contraption or you may have your Visor/GPS as a projectile if the air bags ever deploy.
zero.... thanks for your input. I believe we are talking about the same bracket. I've already pulled it apart, and thought about how I can best mutilate it to fit my needs.
Anyone else have an idea?? Perhaps a modified cell phone holder??

Try the 6" Universal Phone mount from Radio Shack. I was able to "mutilate" the foam pads
on the sides a bit to get the Visor to fit properly. Please note though that because of the GPS
Companion's size, you will not be able to fit the Visor all the way down into the mount.
However, the side foam pads keep the Visor firmly in place. I have had no troubles at all,
even while driving down a gravel road!
