Thumbs down NO ADS PLEASE

I am tired of being bombarded with ads. No where is sacred anymore. Everywhere you go you see ads -- in the elevator, in the wash room, on garbage boxes (more appropriate place). It is getting out of hand. I believe that there will be a major backlash if ads are introduced to wireless devices such as PDAs and Cell Phones. There is already a backlash on web advertising.

It would be interestign to see what others think.

Unhappy

Ads are a pain in the ass, but it should also be kept in mind that nobody is really turning a direct profit from all of the wireless content they provide (except maybe AvantGo, who charges sites for prominent placement and promotion on their web site). Right now it's pretty much running "Wow factor", but sooner or later somebody's going to want to see money for the resources allocated to provide wireless content. The easiest solution is to sell advertising. It will be interesting to see who advertises, though; I wonder if it will be more 'real world' companies as opposed to dot coms, going on the theory that the user is out and about, esp. if he's on a yellow pages/map site.

There are degrees of annoyance, though... I think AvantGo does a very tasteful job with the ads they place on your channel homepage... brief, unobtrusive text links that take you to a page with more information. If OmniSky and DoubleClick came up with some scheme whereby every page is preceded by a 150x150 color graphic ad, that would be a bit excessive. And there's also the fact that most pages people will be visiting will already have ads of their own. Hmm.

Angry

1) Advertising is like a virus; once one gets it, they'll ALL get it.

2) I PREDICT that once they do start advertising, the service providers will offer an advertising-free option. That is, for an additional fee.

Unlike AvantGo, however, Omnisky is a paid-for service. Having a service provider that you already pay for service insert ads is ridiculous. Imagine if every time you try to make a phone call, you first had to listen to a 30-second ad (think it would never happen? AT&T has already done it!) The only way this would be acceptable is if the service is free, then there's a reason people should be forced to look at the ads, since they aren't paying for the service. Otherwise, it's just another example of greedy corporations trying to milk more money off of their customers (reminds me of my friend who just tried to cancel one of her credit cards and was forced to stay on the phone for half an hour as the customer 'service' guy badgered her until she broke down and signed up for ANOTHER CARD!!!...and people wonder why everyone's has so much credit card debt!)

Well if wireless advertising becomes prevelant I will be looking to companies like symantec to make ad blocking software. If you haven't tried Norton internet security or the like I highly recomend it. It seamlessless blocks all sorts of advertising junk and allows you to ad update adition sites that host advertisements. No more crappy java ads crashing your computer and no mor waiting for a page to load because of a slow ad server.

Ads Happen.

I do agree that it's completely ridiculous to place ads on a paid for service. It's like paying your ISP bill but having a freei banner window on your screen anyway. Aren't these guys charging a premium for their service in the first place?

Thumbs down Another reason to 'can OmniSky

To heck with 'em. They won't support my VDX and now they're going to take up my precious screen real-estate and time with ADS!

They've missed the boat, big time. Again.
