-- Serial cable question (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=3750)

Wink

I was wondering about the connection to the Visor with one of these cables. It seems that when the Visor is in the cradle it just sits on the two posts and makes connection. Does the serial cable clip in somehow so that it stays in place or do you have to hold it? Thanks.

As of right now, thereis not a serial cable available for the Visor. One should be available soon from a company called Mark/Space. Handspring currently only offers a USB HotSync cable.

In answer to your question, it "snaps" into the bottom of the Visor with two little locking tabs that latch inside the two "holes" on either side of the docking connector. These are then released via a small pushbutton on either side for removal. It is a very secure connection, although I wouldn't advise swinging the Visor by the cable!

Actually that one from Mark/Space is the one i was looking at. My company is developing software to connect to our equipment and this cable would be all we need. Thanks for the info.

Glad to help out...

One thing to note if you're not aware of it already: the serial connection on the Visor is not true RS232. The Visor signals are TTL-level requiring a transceiver circuit to convert them. Also, the port only has RXD and TXD. There are no handshaking lines at all. According to Handspring, this limits devices to serial rates up to 9600. The Developer's Kit manual contains all the details.
