I've been using an Iomega PCMCIA ClikDrive in my laptop for awhile now and it occured to me that Iomega could/should make a Handspring module version! Why not! These little things hold 40MB! Cheap backup for any handheld.

don't they have a little rotating disk inside?

i've read reviewers who have tried the IBM CF card CompactDrive or whatever it's called, and they said that the fact that the unit has to power a mechanical device (rotating the disk) battery drain was very noticable.

probably true for the clickdrive aswell.

Unfortunately iomega's tech specs don't quote any numbers for power consumption. They mention that the drive shuts down when idle to conserve power, which means that it probably has a pretty high spin up current requirement. The springboard slot can only source 100mA and my guess is that the PocketZip (aka Clik!) drive will want 2 to 4 times that to spin up.

The $0.25/MB price of the media certainly beats $1.50/MB for CompactFlash, but CF cards are a lot easier on batteries. And when you factor in the cost of the drive, the picture changes a bit. How many 40MB disks would a Visor owner really need?

However, I do hope iomega will push this technology hard in other applications because the competition is bound to drive the prices of solid-state storage down

Actually, what would be cool from Iomega is a springboard version of thier hipclick! MP3 player. That is an mp3 player that uses the 40MB click disks instead of the CF cards.
