-- help ! VPL or palm device?? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=10654)
I have been one of those die hard palm users for about 2 years now.I have owned just about everyone they make. IIIx,IIIxe,Vx and currently the IIIc. I would like to go back to monochrome and regular batteries. I don't want to spend the money to carry all kinds of adaptors with me to keep my unit charged. I also work outside so i have had a hard time viewing a colored unit. Before jumping back to a IIIxe i thought i would research what else is out there . I came across the VPL and the sony.Money is not an issue so I am looking at function and performance. I like the idea of a backup module and the 8meg module. I don't like the small screen of the sony and looks of it. At one point i tryed a visor Deluxe for about 3 hours. I bought one of the original Vdx and had alot of problems with it. Granted it was new to the market , but the thing would stick to the cradle and crash all the time. Avantgo wouldn't work and tech support didn't know what to tell me. That was a long time ago and I have been reading alot on how Handspring is jumping ahead of palm in color , speed and expansion. Rumor is that palm wont boost there line to faster processors till 2002.
Anyway back to the subject. I have read some comments about problems with the VPL. I would like to know if these problems are still out there. Problems with lines on the screen and hard to read LCD. Are these things just a few bugs or wide spread? I have read on some sites that the Vdx has a better reading screen? Is this true? Any info would help so i can make up my mind ... thanks... It just feels weird posting on a Visor site.... I was pretty die hard palm. I could see me with a MP3 module. Maybe its time i make a change... :-) Help

A good reason to buy local
There have been some problems with paint, and lines on the screen with platinums. I ordered off the WWW and my platinum should be here monday. I'm crossing my fingers that it won't exhibit any of those problems.
I could have bought my Platinum from the local Staples store. They have them in stock, and you can open a box and inspect the one you want to buy before leaving the sales counter. I bought my wife a Visor basic this way. I was impressed with that particular salesman's insistance that I inspect it in the store, even putting in batteries and turning it on. I KNEW when I left the store that her Visor was free of all the common defects mentioned on this board.
But I wanted to save some money, so I ordered off the web. It's a crap shoot, but I've taken that same chance dozens of times before. If it's a perfect Platinum, I'll have saved about $20 (in sales tax). If it's defective, I'll probably pay that in shipping and misery sending it back and waiting for a better one.
My point? If you're afriad of defects, buy a platinum from a local dealer. Inspect the daylights out of it before you leave the store. My wife loves her Visor. If my Platinum is at least as functional as her Visor is, I'll be delighted.
