Printers for PDAs?

Has anyone heard of printers for PDA's using infared technology? I know there is one, but I overlooked it at the store the other day. Are they really that useful? It looks like it prints on smaller paper using thermal technology. Are there ones that print full size? Where can I get more information?

SiPix, etc.

Alan Graham is travelling around (see <http://www.visoradventure.com/> ) with the SiPix portable printer. It's pretty spiffy, if it meets your needs. That's probably what you saw. (Take a look at the Gear page at the VisorAdventure site.)

Do you need to print business letters? Professional-looking documents? Then the SiPix isn't for you. In fact, your best bet is probably the hotel's printer (Marriott Courtyards -- <http://www.marriott.com/> -- have printers in the lobby for guests that need them. Inkjets, iirc) or your local Kinko's.

If what you need is the ability to print out some notes to give people you're meeting with at the local pub or receipts or something, than the SiPix may very well work.

If you want letter-size paper, inkjet, portable but you don't care so much about size and weight, then take a look at the InfraReady from Bachmann (see <http://www.bachmannsoftware.com/> for info) and one of the standard parallel port portable printers. I haven't kept up on them lately, but 10 years ago or so, Mannesman-Tally made a pretty sexy laserjet-compatible, 6ppm portable printer that wasn't too big. Or there was HP's portable deskjet. I'm sure there are others now.

If you want to print professional paper you will have to get InStep Print from www.instepgroup.com The currently support many PalmOS wordprocessors. My favorite is WordSmith and I have to tell you that InStep Print does a better job in quality than PrintBoy. The only disadvantage is the speed in some IRprinters. But they are working on improving this. I have a PhotoSmart 1215vm and I can print using the IRport without no problem.
