-- ..and again suddenly no USB hotsync with 98SE (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=9212)
Hi,
since yesterday my Visor Deluxe is no longer able to get a connection to the PC (running 98 SE). When I press the hotsync button the Visor tells me "Connecting to desktop" and after a while "Unable to connect... Check setup". I had blue screen yesterday - don`t know if this might be the reason.
I have tried a soft reset, removed that entry from the registry, tried the other USB port, booted my PC with and without cradle connected - nothing helped.
In the hardware manager I have seen that under "Universal seriel Bus Controller" there are two entries (ALi PCI/USB Open Host Controller and USB Stem hub) I don`t know the exact english name - it`s a german Win98. Both entries had a yello "!". I then reinstalled the driver and the yellow "!" for the ALi PCI/USB Open Host Controller was gone. For the USB Stem Hub it says that "the program was not able to load the device driver (Code 2)". If I check the driver, it says that a new driver is installed. So the yellow "!" is always there.
Do I have to get this entry working or is there any other reason why my hotsync stopped working from one day to the other? I did not try another cradle.
Thanks for every help
Kati
Now I have tried to uninstall and reinstall my USB port, deleted and reinstalled the handspring software, disabled and enabled USB port in the BIOS and I am still left with this dead device.
Any secrets to tell?
Forgot to ask: Can anyone with a functioning Visor on a USB port tell me, which entries I should find in the device manager under USB? Is there an entry "Handspring Visor"?
Thank you in advance
Kati,
I have a Belkin USB Hub manager on my machine and there is no reference to a Handspring Visor USB entry in the device manager. I actually have 5 devices on the machine and no specific reference to any of them except the HP printer which is on it's own port.
That yellow ! is the root problem, I believe. You should have a USB Com port under the Port's device manager and this should probably be a Com 2 port but not necessarily depending upon your modem and mouse settings.
With the yellow ! you'll probably have to delete both USB devices and then reinstall from the Win98 CD's. Once these are back up and running provided you don't have yellow ! then reintstall the Handspring software and before performing the first sync - turn off the "local serial" connection from the hot sync manager. I have seen computers hang when searching for both a serial and USB connection.
You might just try this last step first though before you start deleting the main USB drivers.

Thank you for the hints.
I have removed this entry USB Root Hub with the yellow "!", restartet my PC and the computer did reinstall "successfully" the driver without alarm message. But if I check it in the device manager again, the damn yellow "!" is back telling me that the program was not able to load the driver (Code 2).
What else can I do? May be that is a question for a Windows specialist.
Is there one out there?
Thank you very much in advance
Kati
Kati-
Check out the following page from http://www.computerhope.com
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000297.htm
http://www.computerhope.com/win95er.htm
The first page is general trouble shooting for USB and the second page explains what the error codes from device manager mean. Code 2 is a driver problem.
Hope that helps
