After searching 6 Staples stores in the DC area, I found one that still had a couple clearanced Handspring modems. So I picked one up. Now I'm wired. My problem is that my normal ISP is AOL (I know, I know... ) and it won't permit web browsing. I've loaded copies of Browse-it, Eudora, and Proxiweb onto my deluxe and would like to test drive them. All I'm missing is an ISP.

Anyone have any suggestion of a good, cheap ISP? I travel a lot, so numbers nationwide would be nice. I don't plan on doing a lot of web cruising- just once in a while so small cheap plan with a few hours will work. I noticed ATT has a $4.95 plan but it has a navigation bar that I'm not sure would work on the visor.

Any suggestions would help.

Dial Up Baby

I was able to tap into the ISP that my company uses. While we have a cable subscription at work our ISP also provides dial-up numbers so that customers can access the net from laptops, and by extension, PDAs.

For my purposes a local number works better than an in-state toll free line because I travel outside the state often and prefer to pay for the toll call (2 minutes)rather than sort through a vast array of local access numbers and reconfigure my log on preferences to get "free access".

You may want to have a look at http://www.freedomlist.com/ to find some free / cheap ISPs. Also, check out http://www.geocities.com/daveinfopa...ot_freeISP.html, this has information specific to getting connected with the Palm OS.

I use Worldnet myself with my Thinmodem+, but we (our office) has a subscription to the service for when we travel. If you do go with ATT, check out http://www.christopherzguris.com/palm/worldnet.html to find out specifics on getting connected with this service (although I think it will only work using the ad-free service.)

With Worldnet, you will have problems sending email to any SMTP server that does not belong to Worldnet (they do not allow traffic on port 25). This causes a problem when I travel (I use Worldnet) but at home I use a different ISP. When ever I use one or the other, I have to switch my account information to use a server that is correct for the system I am on. PITA, but it just takes a minute to change.

I'm also looking at Worldnet for this summer. But I want to be able to use the $5.95 service.. darn Any better suggestions? I only need 200 hours a month..

I'm using the ATT Worldnet service (the 4.95) one, and it works great. I currently use it on the mac, and i used took my assigned username and password and put it into PPP and it worked fine, though the mac is not technically supported - no software had to be installed or anything. The navigationbar software on my PC didn't work either, so i did the same and plugged the names directly into dialup networking and it worked fine. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work with the visor, except that it uses a different logon protocol to reduce login time (it connects you first, and you can browse the web and then it checks your username and password), it's actually a bit bizzare, but i think that it would still work with the visor.
