Narnia:
No offense to you or the format intended. I wasn't denigrating eBook per se, but simply stating that the available content doesn't match with my current reading tastes. I'm fully aware that there's an enormous range of titles out there, but it's generally either very populist or public domain classics I've already read. Fifteen years from now it won't be a problem, but for now I'm not satisfied with the available selection.
Thanks Swendor...I sent an Email to customer service and asked for further details. Hopefully it is an optional battery pack.
Off topic detour here -
Gameboy70: No offense taken.
I AM curious... what kind of books do you read?
I'm a philoshopy buff: Heiddeger, Wittgenstein, Husserl, Derrida, etc. Lots of stuff on epistemology, phenomenology and lingustics. A lot these texts are from European authors who still have active copyrights. Heidegger's estate, for instance, is very protective of his work (having been quoted out of context many times), and won't release his books electronically.
Right now, eBooks are roughly in the same position that CDs were in the early eighties. The CD was a great format, but if you were, say, a free jazz afficianado, you were out of luck. Now you can get just about anything on CD. The same will happen with eBooks soon enough, but for right now, I'm pretty much stuck with traditional books.
I called Innogear customer service for information on the optional accessory "Extended power pack". They indicated that this is just a planned product. They had no information as to what it was as it is not available yet and can't be pre-ordered. The rep wouldn't even speculate as to what it is. I guess I'll have to wait to see.
quote:Deep, Gameboy, real deep... Compared to what you read, I like "fluff" - you know, the "commercial" stuff.

I've already bought some MMC's.
I special ordered them from a camera store that deals in digital cameras. Took about 3 weeks, and they were expensive, although I don't recall offhand just how much. I got them in anticapation of purchasing a MiniJam with zero memory, which I may still do. If I don't get the minijam after all, check e-bay, the cards may show up there
. MMC cards are different than SmartMedia, being slightly thicker but about half the length and width, and will not work with devices meant for other cards.
BTW, how long have you worked for Innogear's PR firm, "hotVisorbabe"?
Wouldn't this require a new type of case to carry your visor in with the MP3? It doesn't look like it will be able to the 'snap in' type cases.

We hope to make the first of the accessories available at or about the time of the MiniJam's first release. (Mid-August) Details as to form and function will be available at that time
Hi Gameboy,
Could you define epistemology and phenomenology? They werent in my visor dictionary
Seriously though, I am curious having enjoyed philosophy in college.

Superstream:
Epistomology is the study of knowlege formation, i.e. the set of facts and ideas that a particular individual or culture uses to define a worldview. For instance, western epistemology is in large part based on Cartesian reductionism: if you don't understand something, split it up into smaller parts that can be understood (this is a real oversimplication, but it illustrates the point). So the scientific method has been our primary means of evaluating the truth of a particular belief.
Phenomenology is a school of philosophy most associated with Heidegger, Wittgenstein, McKeon, Dilthey and Merleau-Ponty. Rather than simply addressing the question of being a priori, phenomenology hoped to investigate existential issues by studying being's relationship to perception, cognition and behavior (i.e. phenomena). Heiddeger's Being and Time (not available as an eBook) is the most famous work, not only in phenomenology but in the formation of Existentialism.
These aren't exactly dictionary definitions. Since I don't have a dictionary handy I'm shooting from the hip. It'd be nice if the Merriam-Webster springboard would come out.

(I'm not ashamed to admit it... Brought up memories of me asking my mother what something I heard meant and her saying, "Go look it up." Which made me mad, because I figured that if I couldn't spell it, I couldn't look it up...) You know, I just HAD to look them up:

Enough already.
Kill this thread.
First we have hotvisorbabe plagiarizing innogears public relations material. Hard to take, but at least it initiates discussion.
But the Philosophy 105 class notes?
Sorry Chitown, I only answered the questions I was asked. You should be thankful I kept my answers so short. You do not want to get stuck on a bus with me going on about these topics.
What was the subject? Oh, yes, the MiniJam. Sorry, no dice. After months of ambivalence, I'm over the MiniJam. Most of the reasons I've already explained, but the lack of voice recording was the last straw. I've got better things to do than wait until (probably the end of) 2001 for the voice recording version.
