-- Argh: Visor/USB driver missing? Pls help (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=1907)
forgive the dual post. Just seeking an answer from all corners:
Has anyone seen the Visor USB driver in their travels?
Upon attempting Hotsync via Win98 and USB after installing software from visor disk, I encountered an error: "New hardware found ... searching for driver ... driver not found"
Could not find the driver on the disk or anywhere on Handpsring.com .
Not ready to shoot myself just yet, but loading the pistol for a certain 2-oz. piece of new hardware...

Have the same problem as Factoid.
program searches for visor driver but cannot find it.

Did you install the software before connecting the cradle? If so then you might try uninstalling and then intalling software before connecting the USB because I never got the searching for new device driver on my machine during installation. It found it before that had occured.
If not try and direct the search for driver into the cabs folder found on the Visor disk...it should be in there.
I know this might not help lots but it might give you some different ideas.
Moose:
Yep, I sure did try that. No soap.
I couldn't even find the driver on the install disk using Windows Explorer.
I know it sounds weird, you'd think the company would put out a consistent set of software on all disks, but the driver was nowhere to be found (or was I looking for the wrong thing -- any file named *.ini ?) It amazes me that HS doesn't have it on their site.
Where else could it be?

The driver is probably a Virtual Device Driver so look for files with the *.VXD extension. Also, if you're looking for driver information, you might try *.INF files (INFormation files not INItialization files).
I don't have the software yet, so I can't give any more details. I hope this helps.

What is your software win95, 98 or nt?
If its win98 look to see if device manager has the Univerisal Serial Bus controllers installed. and that there are no conflicts
Also is the USB inable on the PC's Bios? Long shot could be that you need to update bios on MB.
I found no .vxd or .inf files on the disk that functioned as drivers.
I tried in Win'95 until I read somewhere that USB - despite the presence of USB controller driver and a USB board in my new company-issued box - works only with '98.
I then tried it on a buddy's Win'98 machine and got the results described in my first post above.
I have not checked the BIOS yet, but I guess that is next.
What's baffling me is the machine says no driver has been loaded, it refuses to find it when I click "search for driver" from Device Manager, and no one has seen the driver file itself or can clue me in to its name and/or location.
I'm MYSTIFIED.
And growing grumpy, as I'm too impatient to wait 4-6 wks for my serial cradle to arrive in the mail.
Any other advice, folks?

A little additional info:
Check under the my computer properties window to determine if there is a USB device manager present on that Win98 desktop. If it is, I don't understand why you can't get it to work.
The other suggestion is:
From the windows explorer window do a print screen capture of the Visor CD Rom and email it to me. I'll compare it to my disk and see if all of the same files are there. You can paste the print screen into a Word document and send it to me.
You might have to have multiple captures in order to see the details of each folder on the disk but this might boil the issue down to a missing file.
factoid:
If you have doubts about the contents of your disk, someone was kind enough to post their installation software on their ftp site for free downloads:

Good Luck
Moose, rtalain:
Thanks so much for the information. I'm out of town right now but will try these suggestions when I return to my box on Thursday 12/14. For anyone else with this trouble, I'll be posting results here.

look in the c:/windows/inf directory. i believe the handspring site says something about this problem occuring when you try to hotsync the unit before installing the drivers...
One other thought. When I got my visor, I upgraded from win95 to win98 to permit USB.
I had to then go into setup (on bootup) and enable the USB port before the USB driver and the visor software could find the port.
Since then, USB syncs perfectly.

I got the same error messages as you described when I tried my USB cradle. After getting the error, I unplugged the USB and re-plugged it to a vacant USB outlet. It found the cradle after i pressend hotsync and it successfully synced all my stuff.
You may have tried this already, but i wanted to share this, just in case.
good luck!

Thanks all, for the sage advice. To save money, I shifted my approach from my PC, which would have required a Win98 upgrade, to my Mac, which required a cheaper solution - a USB card.
Read my tale of MacWoe elsewhere on this board.
