restore using Backup Buddy both unit and flash-module how to

Whew, what a pain in the arse.

I gave my pc-less girlfriend my VDX after buying a Mako (which I have not regretted).

It has a flash module with Jack Back so I did not think I would have this problem, but the flash module was wiped out BY Jack Back (that is what happens when you try to cansel in the middle of a back-up I guess). After that, she ran the batteries down and there is nothing left of any of the data.

No problem I thought. I had her bring it by so all of the apps could be restored and she could then put her personal info back in.

It turns out that, even though Backup buddy will backup the flash module, it wont actually restore the module.

Here are the steps to restore such a situation. This involves having both backup buddy and a freeware app called Pilot Install (http://pinstall.evicon.com)

1. Hard reset the visor (power button+reset button)

2. Open the folder (on a pc):
program files/palm/[your user name]/BackupHSFlashModule

3. Press control+A (select all)

4. Hold down control and click the four file mover files. (deselect them). You now should have every file in the BackupHSFlashModule folder selected but the file mover files. Having the file mover files living in ram caused fatal exceptions for me.

5. Hit the enter key. This should launch the Pilot Install program. I am not sure how this would work without the Pilot Install program. I assume you would hot sync the handheld with only the install conduit enabled.

6. Push Hot Sync. And wait while all of the files load onto the visor.

7. After all of the files are installed, use file mover to move them all to the module. Now that your flash module is restored remove it.

8. Hard reset again.

9. Disable all conduits in hotsync, and then set backup buddy to: desktop overwrites handheld.

10. Hot sync. Backup buddy will restore the handheld databases and apps.

11. Hot sync again with all of the regular conduits at their default.

These steps will save lots of time if you are using a handheld as packed full of junk on the module and handheld as mine is.

Then he went on to tell the audience the importance of a good education. He said: 'Sometimes boys and girls would rather watch TV than read. When your teachers say read, they are giving you pretty damn good advice.' "
