cannot install palm desktop on win2k

Trying to install Palm Desktop 4.01H on a windows 2000 professional machine.

I downloaded the installer from Handspring, and get the following error (attached). Called Handspring, they wanted me to get an updated winsock32, but after looking at MS's site we both concluded that would not help on win2k.

Their theory is that the latest IE (6.02 I think I am running, it's the most current) is causing the problem and I should downgrade. The problem with testing this is that it's very hard to downgrade IE! (hello antitrust suit!)

Surely someone has hit this error before? I can't be the only person running win2k and current IE who has tried to install this?

I was very amused to find that Handspring now has a "usb registry cleaner" built into this version. For months I have been complaining that I had to delete my hardware entry before being able to sync, around once a week or so. Now they actually have a fix, go figure.

Sorry

For what it's worth, I just installed the Palm Desktop with no problems. I am running Win2K with IE 5.5. I first installed the version that came with my new Prism, then I download version 4 from Handspring. Installed with zero errors (that's no errors, not errors related to 0 )

Anyone else?

Handpsring called back, said they don't have a fix for this problem and I should just keep using desktop 3.01. The problem is that my software is messed up from a windows user profile change and I need to reinstall it (that's why I was trying 4.01) and I can't get the earlier software to load either, although it gives a different error.

Any experience here? I haven't been able to sync in a couple of weeks now...

Question: Do you have Administrators access while trying to install the desktop?

If not, try getting your current user login to have Administrators access, then try the install, then revoke the Administrators access. My understanding is that Windows 2000 and greater requires Administrators access to install the Palm desktop. However, it does not work to just install it as Administrator, for there are several settings that it makes to the registry, which are user specific.

I don't know what else to do here. I see no other windows problems. I even went into the registry and deleted all palm entries...

Profile related?
Have you tried creating another user ID with Admin rights. See if you can load the program cleanly. if so you may have to delete your existing profile and let Win2k create you a new one when you log back on.
