-- soft screen (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=1704)
So what's the deal with this soft screen business that seems to plague at least some visor/palm units? I recieved my BVD last week, and it seems like the membrane that covers the glass on the screen is too loose, the screen indents a bit when touched. I know this isn't unique to the Visor, as I took a look at a number of palm units at the local office depot. Some of them had screens like smooth glass, others even more mushy than my visor. There is a tiny amount of give in the blue part of the case when squeezed, perhaps this is where the slack is coming from, is this normal? Have a writeright on the screen, any other suggestions other than either put up with it or try to wade through the morass called customer service? Semi-defective unit, or par for the course? Except for the fact the cover and stylus suck, everything else seems to work great.
Though I haven't even gotten the Visor yet I am worried about this very issue and am anxious to hear any remedy.

I didn't like the feel of the screen, just too soft, that's why I sold mine after 2 days. I was worried about how durable it would be compared to the hard screens of the palms. The Visor's screen was more sensitive however, so it would be up to you to decide which you like best
This "soft screen" phenomena you are all describing is nothing to worry about, at least in my experience. I had a Palm V which I recently traded in for a Vx (after cancelling my Visor order - another story), and the screen on my V was of the "soft" variety. After 6 months of hard usage and no form of screen protection (i.e. WriteRights), I had no scratches whatsoever. Admittedly, I did clean the screen regularly with a cotton cloth and diluted Windex.
What this comes down to is that there are certain acceptable "tolerences" in the manufacturing process. Akin to the backlight issue (some are bright, some are not), the chances of getting a hard or soft screen are about 50/50. All Palm devices, be they Visors, V's or III's use a plastic membrane over glass. Some are just seated more firmly.
If you receive a Visor with a "soft" screen, my advice is to count yourself lucky you got one at all. In the long run, it won't make a difference.
