-- Proposed Visor newsgroup..... (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=1465)
I love this website and message board. I visit it everyday.
I have proposed to alt.config that we create a Visor news group.

In no way am I trying to take trafic away from this site, in fact I feel we will get more. Anyways, lets see if it gets approved.
Heyday
I have seen the Palm newsgroup and I agree that we Visor users need our own. I hope it gets approved!
VisorCentral has >3700 registered users with a high number of posts daily. Visor Central posts all news items from other newsmakers plus makes news itself. What will your proposed site offer / have that VisorCentral does not have?

Like I said, I don't want to take any focus off of this site. I would dare to say that there are many people who don't know about visorcentral but do search newsgroups. Also when I travel with my Palm I like to check newsgroups with my Palm and web based message boards area a little difficult to check.
All that aside. I just think that it is time for Visor newsgroup. There are several Palm groups out there why not a Visor group.

Right now there are 2 ONEList groups, 1 under Handspring, the other under Visor. Just 100/200 list subscribers. Not many posts and it's very clear that both the quality of the posts and knowledge base is way below VisorCentral. Subjects covered very limited. Why not just post on those lists, newsgroups, etc. telling of VisorCentral

The best newsreader that I've found for the Palm is the Yanoff newsreader. Make sure you reed the documentation.

I have also used a browser to get to http://www.remarq.com to read my news.
You can search http://www.palmgear.com to see if there are any others.

I think the web is making a dent in the appeal of newsgroups. I see no advantage, for instance, to having a newsgroup; it will merely divert a portion of the possible membership from this site.
The web sites are better IMHO because they can be moderated and set rules and standards. It is not the free for all that exists in the alt*.* forums. Some web sites are not well done, and that's a problem, in which case competitors arise. But a well done web site these days is to me far more readable, easier to use and better moderated than newsgroups. I also tend not to get as much junk mail, but that's another story.

I used to use Deja.com until I found out about http://www.remarq.com Very slick web based news reader.
One other important thing to think about. I can download newsgroups on my handspring when I'm out traveling.....much easier to use than trying to use a Palm web browser.
Heyday
I personally don't think that a news group is such a good idea. I have had my vdx for abt 3 weeks and I subscribe to a couple of news groups for palm etc. and I don't find them worth while. The groups haven't posted anything new in or abt 3 weeks.
I have learned more from this sight than anywhere else.
all I can say is keep up the good work guys and gals

Hi,
I'm a new Visor user, and I cannot tell you how much I've learned from reading the visorcentral bulletin boards every day! But I'm also an avid usenet newsgroup reader, and I'd love to see a visor group out there -- not another e-mail list, but a newsgroup!
I have one question for Heyday: I successfully read this bulletin board on my Visor through a custom channel on Avantgo, but how does one read newsgroups on the Visor? As I said before, I'm new at this, and I've learned a lot, but I have not yet figured out how to download usenet groups -- and I would LOVE to. Any advice would be appreciated!

If you are browsing it offline you would need to create your customer channel so that it followed enough links down.
I use my modem on my Visor and do it online. I can get to anywhere in the forums.

Thanks! I have a standard Visor with only 2MB of RAM, so I had to trim things down quite a bit, but I got it working!

My link depth is set at 5.
My maximum channel size is set at 1200K. (My visor discussions currently take up 1167K. I know it's a lot, but as a new Visor owner, I really love these discussions!)
Good luck!
