Pinellas County School Resource officers and adminstrators are using PDA's to help with determining student schedules, name/address for emergencies, etc. Newspaper article did not mention if they were Palm or PPC.
Hopefully they are using password protection software in case a unit is lost or stolen.
Students should be allowed to use PDA's in school. They are a tool just as calculators are. I'm sure that teachers can tell if a student is using it for notes or just playing games.

What burns me up is the absolute lack of tech support at school. I'm not expecting much, just SOME way to access the printers at school. They don't have any IR printers, won't by the adapter, don't have cradles, and won't even spring for a goddman CF card reader! I got Nothing! And those stupid teachers won't allow PDAs in their classes. Why? Most probably they're IT-illiterate or they think we're playing games in class.

Well, I've used my Visor's built-in calc in Physics class one day when I forgot to bring my calculator, and the teacher walked past and gave it a peep :P

I just get a lot of, what is this a calculator? and where'd you get the money to pay for that?...That's about it...Teachers and staff aren't realy into technology in my school so to them it's just a calculator, and to my classmates it's something rediculously expensive to own.

I've used my visor for notes since day 1. As for playing games during classes - I only do it when the class is elementary or the prof is an idiot.

I always find it interesting when a prof has to resort to banning all forms of diversion to get the student to pay attention (granted, it's a different story with children). It's a sad commentary, to say the least.

Well, just the other day, my English teacher saw me using my Deluxe and asked me to "show" her how it works.

I showed her that I was able to use Graffiti and the software keyboard to input text and to do essays and stuff like that.

And I showed her the DateBook function, the AddressBook function, DiddleBug and To-Do list, and other apps... and boy, was she impressed!

Well, she's the only teacher that don't mind me using my Visor in class... so far :P

One quick question

I was just wondering what programs you use to take notes and keep homework organized?

Do you use grafiti, onscreen keyboard, or notes on the screen?

I use Wordsmith Memopad to write down my homework with graffiti and Wordsmith with the onscreen keyboard to start to write essays (need stowaway badly).

I use Wordsmith to write essays with a Stowaway. For taking notes, it depends on the class. Of course, I use Wordsmith as the program I write them in (though there are a few programs, like ThoughtManager, that do this function better). For short note situation like Comp I, I use Graffiti. For long note situations like AP Biology, I use the Stowaway. For diagrams, I use BugMe! Messenger.

I am a high school English teacher and a college student (working on my master's). I use my visor and keyboard to take notes (docs to go) and as an organizer (lesson plans, attendance, grading) for the classroom. Last year I was the only teacher on campus to use a visor. This year five other teachers have bought palms or visors. I have not seen any students with handhelds this year. Last year one of my students had a visor, but he has since graduated. Yes, one of my colleagues did try to collect his visor and wouldn't let him use it in class. The student and I went together to the principal and now handheld computers are not banned (while other electronic devices still are).

I have been the only person in my college classes taking notes on a handheld. I have seen other students on the college campus with palms, but not in my classes.
