Anybody use there visor as a keyless entry remote? I have a couple times. My Jeep Grand Cherooke has an infrared keyless entry system that unlocks the doors, deactivates the alarm and turns the lights on. Its great when I needed to get something out of my Jeep but didn't have my keys
I use the omniremote program and just trained it...

There was some media coverage of that a while back. It may be a nice tool, but there are other people with Palm pilots w/IR, and they too can record the signals coming from the remote. thereby gaining access to your vehicle. I don't think anyone has ever had any breakins because of this (correct me if I'm wrong), but if you err to the side of paranoia, keep this in mind..

Weird, about a year ago I tried this on my BMW, and it didn't work. I just saw this post, tried it on my Jeep Grand Cherokee, and it works with that vehicle. That's a dangerous thing.

How about this for dangerous. I walked over to a guys desk where I work and tried to learn his remote for his Jeep. It worked and he wasn't even there. I never tried it out but it sounds like it will work fine. Keep an eye on your remote!

The BMW probably didn't work because it's an RF remote instead of an IR remote. I am suprised that the Jeep uses an IR, as you said that could be captured fairly easily especially since it apparently doesn't use a rolling code or anything. My Acura has an RF remote, I think my VW has an IR. I can 'beep' my Acura from inside a building, 3 stories up, while the keychain is in my pocket or hanging on a wall facing away from the street with my car parked about 60 years from the base of the builing. My VW almost needs to be activated while standing right next to the door with the keychain touching the car. I think that illustrates the difference.

Thanks Maltair! I also have a Jeep Grand Cherokee with one fully functional remote (wifes) and the 2nd one only unlocks the doors. Cost to replace the bad remote was over $125! Definately an OUCH!

Since my VDx is always with me, I now have a new cheap fix!

Maltair - Any special tips for training the Vdx for Jeep's IR?

Also, regarding security - IR needs to be within 10 feet or less (especially with older\worn batteries) to function vs the extended RF range. This minimizes the security risk. Besides, if a thief wants the Jeep, VW, BMW, Honda etc, they will get it and probably bypass the keyless entry anyway (slows them down).

It probably does not work on BMW's since they either use RF or 'rolling codes' (i.e. different encoded IR signals every time...)

both, it was a program at first, but the range of the visor isn't that far, so they created a module to get a bigger range...

Their Faq says...

On their website PacificNeotek in their FAQ It says that it isn't really possible for someone to steal your codes without you knowing. I wouldn't be that paranoid.

Basically, if somebody wants something, it's never impossible for them to steal it. Thank goodness olendorf isn't a malicious person - right olendorf?

Correct! It uses both RF signal and rolling code technology on the bimmer. It's great, but don't lose a key. I lost that plastic key they give you that's for your wallet. Well, that cost me $275 to buy the new one and reprogram the other keys. Think of the springboards I coulda had....
