Sony MP3 Players are known for giving people trouble while trying to upload MP3s that you've download it. You see sony has a a recording branch so releasing a regular MP3 Player is kinda a conflict of interests. Basically the mp3 player only allows you to upload MP3s that you've ripped off of a CD using the sony program, anything else is really hard (if not impossible) to get on the device. Now I am not sure i this thing still exists (I believe it does), but if it doesn't that is one cool looking mp3 player.

It certainly does, I've held one in my hands. It's feather light and is so small I'd be too scared I'd leave it in my pocket and put it through the washing machine!

No, I meant that I am not sure if the problem still exists..Sony might've given in and gotten rid of the obligation for that 2nd generation MP3 Player.

My Nr70v plays both ripped and downloaded MP3's AND off course sony's own format (frogot the name, never use it)

Personally I did not find it that hard to use, I had to set the output dir once and now allI haveto do is pop in the Cd and click on record...pretty easy if you ask me...

Music Match came with my intel mp3 player. I like it just fine. And I'm sure I will like it when my ipod (for windows) comes in late august.

My Treo 600 is my phone, my PDA, my watch, and my MP3 player. Oh yeah, I take a picture once in a while with it. Convergence is such a great thing.

I love the look and feel of those Sony's, but I would never buy one. You must use the MagicGate Memory Stick and it only plays secure music. Notice, nowhere in their info does it say anything about playing regular MP3's. It supports ATRAC3 (the Sony proprietary format) and Windows Media Audio or WMA's (which I would guess probably have to be protected).

This really irritates me, considering my CLIE will play normal, unsecured MP3's on regular Purple MemorySticks. I know it has to do with CopyWrite and I can appreciate that, but it still irritates me. Mostly due to the higher cost of the MagicGate Sticks.

I agree, but I guess thats what you get if the same company sells the CD's and creates MP3 hardware..

Surely there are some legal places out there? If not why are sony wasting their time investing in a technology that is reduced to ripping from cd's?

There are some legal places to download MP3's but they are darn hard to find...
IMHO the record companies are missing the point by working against MP3... they'd better use the technology to their advantage instead of fighting the inevitable...

The Ipod has the edge in size, weight, battery life (because of grayscale screen) and we know the navigational tools are awesome.

Archos has advantage in price ($100 USD less), expandability, and color LCD screen.

My Archos 20 gig Studio does not have a color LCD screen. However, it doesn't use any sort of MP3 file encrypting -- just copy your MP3s up to it -- it's seen as a hard drive -- and go. Personally, I find this a huge benefit; I use those 20 gigs to back up my important files as well as my MP3s, so if my apartment blows up I'll actually be able to restore my accounting tools and the pictures I took at the zoo.

An odd and welcome feature of the Archos is its mostly aluminium construction and foam corner bumpers. It looks extremely durable.

The down side is a clunky interface and you actually do need to read the manual to turn it on -- you have to hold the ON button for several seconds. Despite the fact its batteries are typical NIMH AAs, you can't really use alkalines to replace them. NIMHs and alkalines have different discharge curves and the Archos' power hardware isn't sophisticated enough to handle both.

An interesting feature is that you can generate a playlist in MusicMatch, copy the playlist file to the Archos, and have it play through the music on the playlist. Very spiffy.

It is a brick. Because of that, I also have an iPaq MP3 player, which is okay but far less reliable: the iPaq is the only MP3 player I've ever needed to reset. The iPaq's loading tools are typical for MP3 players, being only two or three times harder to use than conventional copy commands and seizing up or refusing to see the iPaq much less than half the time you try to use it. However, it's not bad enough yet to replace.

I find MusicMatch to be an acceptable MP3 ripper and player. My sense is that the biggest missing feature is that it does not have a display for time remaining in a playlist.

Sorry, confusing the Archos Jukebox with the Archos Multimedia. I guess one has a color LCD screen and the other does not.

Anyone wonder why Apple chaged the disc on the Ipod to a touch screen, did they have any problems or do you think it was a way to make the unit smaller?
