Question

Okay, so I took advantage of the CompUSA deal (or whatever it was/is) and now I have a Prism. I got a Sport Case, but man that thing is bulky - my IIIxe with the Palm leather belt clip case was incredibly svelte by comparison. I rarely carry my IIIxe on my belt - I typically slip it into a jacket (not suit coat - I have a dress down job!) pocket, but when it's too warm for a jacket and I'm walking somewhere I do indeed clip it on my belt. Any suggestions?

Unhappy Need better Prism case solution

Sportcase is the best bet presently. Apart from it being a little bulky, I can deal with it for now. I hope there will be better solutions in the not too distant future.

Thanks Mike. Actually, this morning at CompUSA (they are getting my business now!) I saw the Franklin Covey belt clip case. It is just a bit bigger than the Palm III belt clip case and fits the Prism pretty well. The only concern I have is that the sides of the case don't go all the way to the top - they leave the last inch uncovered. Don't know why. Also, the Body Suit case from Body Glove for the Palm III series looks like a good fit for those who like zip-up (extra protection!) cases.

The Prism will not fit comfortably in the Body Glove case, or at least not in mine.

Smile how about...

I'm looking at the Rhodiana work-through case. There's a review and comments at http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/rhodiana-visor-review.html

It sounds like most who have it like it, and although you can't hotsync with the case, they have changed it to open for a sync cable.

This is all TBD, if I can get assurances on the Prism/CompUSA rebate and feel secure enough to open the box! Such willpower - no restocking fee for me if the whole deal washed out!

Unhappy

I actually ordered a case from Handspring. I really don't want to put velcro on my Prism. If I'm just going to slap it into a zipper case, I'll probably take my stowaway keyboard out of the Student dayrunner thingie I have. I love purple, so I bought one of those zip around daytimers for students (the ones made out of brightly colored canvas). I pulled out the 3 ring binder (it was just held in by putting the plastic cover sheets in the side pockets so I didn't have to rip anything)and put in the keyboard.

some people use other organizer covers and use some type of screwdriver or drill to remove the ring binder part. If you want it to stay put, you'll have to use velcro (ugh) or get creative with elastic.

If handspring would make another plastic cover which would fit the back of the prism we could just sew or glue that into cases and clip it in.

That's the only thing I'll miss about my Deluxe...my purple leather case!

Hey Matt - I know of at least three different "Body Glove" cases. There's the original Body Glove case for the Palm III/VII series - many different colors. I have one for my IIIxe, but when I put the Visor inside it turns on by itself when the case is closed! Then there's the "Body Suit" from Body Glove for the Palm V, which of course would be too small/skinny for the Prism. But to my surprise I found a Body Suit for the Palm III/VII series, different from the Body Glove, which comes in blue and black I tried the Prism in it and I think it's a good fit.

Kam - I truly admire your willpower. Bet you can't hold out until your rebate check comes in 6-8 weeks from now! A coworker is having the same experience you are at the Fair Lakes store - mail it in and pray. The store manager (and Corp HQ) both told her they would take care of it if the rebate was rejected.

Wink

alanf - about your friend: good(?!) to hear I'm not the only one in that boat at that store.

As for willpower, well, I've spent my time ad nauseum checking out cases and software in anticipation, and now have a nice selection of color apps, etc. downloaded and ready to go. I hope to tear into it tomorrow, once I hear from the manager one way or another (hmm...Blondie song title there)

Hm, wasn't aware there were 2 for the Palm III, mine must be the first because it definetly doesn't fir the Prism, varely my Deluxe.

I discovered last night that if I put the Prism in the original Body Glove case backwards (ie, when you open it, the Prism (attached to the velcro) is on the left instead of the right) the Prism does NOT get accidentally turned on inside the case. So maybe I'll go with that.

I'm looking for a Prism case. I had a Rhodiana with my Visor Deluxe, and it worked great except that I was always taking it in/out for syncing. For that reason I'm probably not going to get another Rhodiana...

The Vaja cases look great. They are pricey, but that is OK if the function is good. The one thing that I don't think I would like is the plastic covering over the buttons. What do people think? This seems like a totally lame idea, but I could be wrong. Do the buttons get in the way? Obviously you can't have your Prism Gameface attached, but are they OK for playing other games?

Any comments on the cost of the vaja cases? The 49.95 snap case seems reasonable, but the $69.95 magnetic closure case seems outrageously expensive. Is this justified?

The other thing I'm hoping for is a belt clip. The belt clip on my Rhodiana was great for about 7 1/2 months and then it was not so great as my Visor Deluxe went crashing to the ground. I had the same failure as everyone else - go figure. The Vaja case looks better for this... is it? It seems like the metal probably won't snap off like the plastic did... Any thoughts appreciated.

Cases for Prism

Brian,

I have the magnetic closure sync case for my Palm Vx. To me, for the beauty of it (I have the brown alligator) it's more than worth the money. And it's a great, funtional case as well.

I've ordered the one for the Prism and received a letter from Vaja that the current cases failed the "sync" test. They offered alternatives and/or a discount to take the case that didn't meet their standards syncwise. Though it's a great convenience to sync in the case, I went for the discount and will take my chances.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the reply. These look like they are pretty nice cases... I emailed them yesterday to see if I can get the 30% off deal on the "non-sync" 834. Fat chance, probably, but it's worth a try. With their $14 shipping it will cost the same to wait and buy it from Directcase.com ;-).

The magnetic closure looks nice as does the workmanship. One thing.. the alligator / ostrich refers to the texture and appearance, right? Or is this real alligator or ostrich leather? I don't suppose it matters too much, but I was curious.

The one thing I like about the non-sync cases is that they will at least accept a charger in the car and at home so I won't have to pull my Prism out of its case too often... I'm also holding out hope that it will actually sync and I'll be pleasantly surprised.

What about the Slipper Prism from E&B. It has a belt clip available and you can hot sync with the case on. You can find more info at http://www.ebcases.com The Slipper (for the Visor) received good review from Visor Central. I'm thinking about this case for my Prism. Anybody out there have any experience with this case?

I just about went for one of these last night but am waiting to hear if they will ship to Canada. Could you elaborate a bit on what they mean by "failed" - won't sync / charge at all, or just intermittently?

Also, what were the alternatives / discount that they offered?

Thanks,
Chris

I got the idea from this discussion forum to use the included slipcase that came with my Prism and attach one of those generic belt clips. The clip's post uses that super 3M adhesive. But for added strength I drilled a small hole through the post, un-did the top seam of the case, punched a hole through the case, screwed a small screw from the inside of the case and through the post, and finally sewed up the top seam.

It fits the Prism and the Handspring modem module. I've included pics for those interested.

Total cost: $8

Thumbs up

I got my Handspring slim, leather case today. There's a plastic cover-type thingie that fits on the back of the Prism.

The case isn't flashy...but it works and I don't need velcro! I may see if Handspring will sell me one of the plastic cover-thingies and see if I can get it secured in my purple case...

Thumbs down Cover

I tried to get HS to sell me one of those covers. They would not. I ended up buying the slim case and removing the cover from that. Before I cut it apart I tried it to see if I could live with the slim case, but it is crap. It has a longer reaching cover sewn into the back, but the "spine" of the case is the same as the regular Visors. That means that the case does not close properly over the Prism. I felt no shame in cutting that piece of #$@! apart.

Something to think about.
1 slim leather case............................$24.99
3 hours hacking it to bits (at minimum wage)...$15.45
2 hours reassembling it........................$10.30
6 hours swearing because it didn't work right..$30.90
1 more slim leather case.......................$24.99
3 hours hacking this one to bits...............$15.45
2 hours reassembling it........................$10.30
Medical treatment for wounds received.........$350.00
Counseling (stress is a killer!) $80/visit....$960.00
Satisfaction of doing the job yourself........priceless.

$24.99 + $15.45 + $10.30 + $30.90 + $24.99 + $15.45+ $10.30 + $350 + $960 + $0 = $1442.38. A little bit more than the Vaja, Rhodiana, and E&B combined.
