-- Why does a 2MB Visor only have 1792K usable? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=3125)

Question

In AppLauncher, only 1792KB of memory is listed as usable. I don't have any problem with that, except I bought a 2 meg Visor. RamHog says that 400K or so is the OS. But why is it in RAM? Is this portion upgradable?

Thanks.

No. The operating system is not flash updateable. Sorry. I don't recall what the "missing" RAM is actually used for.

Both the built-in applications and the OS maintain their own databases in RAM (remember, ROM cannot be written to). For example, the OS uses the Saved and Unsaved Preferences databases for maintaining "state" information, etc.

Well my 8MB visor is actually 7.936 MB and my6GB computer is actually 5.59 GB. I don't think computers really have the size that is advertised.

It has something to do with the way you multiply the bits..it was explained to me back before last christmas on this board ....i'll do a search and see if it comes up...

regardless, it's a calculation thing which results in less ...
