-- What's so great about PalmV? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=7947)
Ok I could be really nieve asking this but what is it about the PalmV that makes it $100 more than the Visor? Is it strictly because it's more streamline and it has an aluminum case? I guess the upgradeable OS is also a factor. Or maybe it's simply because it says 'Palm' on the front of it.
I bought the Visor over the PalmV strictly because of price and the springboard. I only realized yesterday that it only had 2MB of capacity.
I'm just curious to know what this thing offers over the Visor when the capacity is so small in comparison.
Ark.
P.S. I forgot to mention the serial hotsynching instead of the USB option with Handspring.... I don't get it.
Differences
The Visor has 2MB of memory, and the Visor Deluxe has 8MB.
The form factor of the Palm V is the biggest difference, I never have upgraded my OS. I switched to the Visor Deluxe for the expandibility of the Springboard slot. I have an eyemodule and an additional 8MB Module. I now have 16MB of memory, which holds lots of apps, games, and over 600 names.

The most important reason is that people are crazy about the form factor: it's small, it looks cool, and it really fits comfortably in your shirt pocket. I didn't "get it" when it came out, either -- especially at its original release price of $499. I thought it would bomb. It turned out to be Palm's most popular product.
"What's so great about PalmV?" It's so "pur-dy". (for a PDA)

palm V is SEXY as HELL. N/M

Yeah that's pretty much what I suspected. The PalmV does look sexy and I guess lots of people go for that.
And you're right fixitgal, I was actually comparing it to the VDx, but when you compare it to the regular 2MB Visor which I guess is a closer comparison as far as functionality, the price difference is even bigger! That's a big price to pay for form factor. My VDx is more than half full and I really don't feel that I have 'alot' of apps on it (it's my first PDA). If I had purchased a PalmV and could only have half of what I have installed now before it was full, I'd be feeling pretty ripped off right about now.
Arker.
sexy
have you seen the advertisement with the babe and her Palm V beaming her personal info through the window from inside the train as it takes off, to the guy left behind on the dock?

hehe.. Yeah I've seen it but my VDx would work just as well. It would actually work better as she would not have to twist her body to the left as the beaming port is convieniently located on the left side. All for half the price!
I bought the VDx over the PalmV so that I could carry 4x the amount of babes personal info. Yet here I stand at the subway station with not even one babe sending me anything. All I seem to get is the occasional friendly wave of the finger as the trains pull away. I guess I shoulda went for the sexier device. This sucks.

she's got the Vx -- not enough room for all her guys in a V
I did this same comparison with the Palm Vx (and ultimately got the Visor Deluxe), but isn't the rechargeable lithium battery with the Palm a plus for the Palm aside from the form factor?
People are divided on whether or not the rechargable battery is a plus. For one thing, the battery can only be recharged a finite number of times. I forget how many times. And while it should last for years, it does mean that Palm V series products have a limited lifespan. I also like having a choice what batteries I want to use, and the instant gratification of just popping them in and being done with it (or having an extra set of rechargables on standby). I feel like my life's on hold enough as it is having to recharge my laptop and cell phone.
Then again, the lithium ion battery that lines the inside of the Palm V's casing is necessary to have that kind of form factor. You couldn't do it with AAA batteries. And a lot of people do find it more convenience not to have to buy and deal with external batteries.
Personally I kind of like the replacable batteries too. Having to stick the PDA on a cradle all the time to recharge would be a pain. I'm finding that my batteries last well and like Gameboy70 said once you put them in, you're done with them. To date I haven't found the batteries to be as expensive as I thought they would. Originally when I was looking for a PDA when I saw that the Visor had replacable batteries I thought it was a strike against. Sure I read at Handspring that the batteries would last 2 months but everyone knows that's bull****. I just wasn't sure how much of an exageration that was. As it turns out, so far I'm happy with the battery life span.

Sleep? I just go to Starbucks.
Vertigo, how long/often does the PalmV need to be recharged under 'normal' use? Once a day? Week? Month? I've never owned one but have a cell phone that is a pain. I suppose I shouldn't knock it since I really don't know what I'm talkin' about eh?
Ark
Palm V and Vx are dead meat now that the Sony is around, is almost the same form factor, and COMES W/A MEM. STIK. Anodized alum. is nice, but not THAT nice!
