Talking

With the proposed price reduction of the Prism to $399.00, should we buy now or wait for the "new" color Visor?

I, for one. am considering throwing caution to the winds and buying a Prism...

I think everyone'll find it tough not to indulge.
If this is HS' plan to sell a ton of Prisms, I think it's a good one.

I would think that this is a "clear the inventory" reduction, making the way for the new product. How about a new $499 device being announced soon? It kinda fits, in the wake of their "premier product" price drop.

I do think that the Prism a great deal @ $399 though. Especially with on-line coupons at e-stores like Staples...

..but what do I know.

It seems clear that we will soon hear about the new Color Edge. However, the $399 price certainly would make me get one if I didn't already own a Prism.

I knew this would happen. I bought mine 17 days ago from Staples. I wonder if they have some kind of a price guarantee.

I think they do. Also ask if you can still use one of their online coupons.

Another option if there's a Best Buy in your area.
- Return the one you got at Staples
- Buy it from BB at the new prices with their 3 year warranty. This allows you to trade in your existing PDA for the full price you paid for it for credit toward new models
- Upgrade to the color Edge when it comes out!

Exclamation

It's probably coincidental that the Sony Clie PEG-N710C is arriving in CompUSA and other major outlets today, selling at the Prism's former price.

Isn't this Prism's first price drop? I thought it launched at $449, the new Clie sells for $499.

Unhappy There is never a good time to buy

My wife got me a prism for my birthday and I love it. However, she got it over 1 month ago, too long for a return or exchange. Now handspring is not only offering the prism for $399.00, but, you can get a visorphone for $99.00! Go ahead and get the prism, keep in mind that there will always be something around the corner (i.e. price drop or new product). You know the old saying, the moment you purchase something, it's obsolete!!

Question Buyer's Quandry

How is the Prism better than the not-yet-a-reality color Edge? Is the current Edge better than the Prism? How so?

I had bought a Prism from BB. I found a crack in the housing next to the power button. I did not remeber dropping it but there were some scratches on the side of the housing near the button.

I have the 3 year policy. They would not replace it. So are you all sure about the leniency of there policy regarding these upgrades?

It probably depends on which store you go to but it could also have to do with all these people trying to cheat the system, perhaps BB & others are catching on and are tightening this policy. Those who return their Visor just to upgrade practice unethical buying habits & it is going to eventually burn you.

Jeff actually had an excuse for getting a new one...oh well, if they won't replace it that way then I guess you better see if your Visor can fly, and if that doesn't work I guess there will be enough damage to it for them to replace it.

Yep. I apologize for my original post about this. The first person I talked to about this was a Best Buy sales rep, and he said with great certainty that you could treat the 3 yr as a trade-in program. I'm starting to think they guy either just started there, or was woefully misinformed.
I was not able to get the same story at any other store.

I have the Best Buy three year warranty and that is precisely why I bought it. I was told I could use it to upgrade to a new model. In fact, I was again told that a couple Saturdays ago when I say the Clie at Best Buy. In fact, the associate was telling a Customer all about the warranty and how he could trade in for a newer model. Very interesting to hear not all stores agree.

Why is it "perjury" in court, but when you lie right into a customer's face, nobody cares?

This kind of "crack in the housing next to the power button" is a pretty famous defect (near-defect?) on the VDX, so HS may be willing to just replace it. (I know the Prism's is on the other side, but maybe there's some "flipped physics" connection w/how the plastic's molded or something?)

Just because you pay the $50 bucks doesn't mean its easy street for the warranty at BB. They still want a receipt or credit card from the original purchase and then they scrutinze everything. Its pretty pissy for something that is made to sound so easy when you buy it.

"They still want a receipt or credit card from the original purchase and then they scrutinze everything. Its pretty pissy for something that is made to sound so easy when you buy it."

That's the way all extended warranties go. They sell them for pure profit, never expecting anyone to ever claim them. Then, even if you do have a legitimate problem, they hastle the ever-living crap out of you to try to get you to back down so they don't have to pay.

That's why I say all extended warranties are a waste of money. Keep a private fund for emergencies in the bank, collect interest, and stop giving your money away to retail theives.
