Unhappy Dst

Although my city is listed as 'auto' for DST, the time has not been updated to account for the change. How do I reset the time on my Visor Pro?

Posted by imabug on 04-08-2002 02:45 PM:

There's a hack called DSTPanel (download from either palmgear.com or freewarepalm.com) that will take care of DST related time changes. Just tell it when DST starts and ends, and that's it.

In the meantime, go to Preferences/General and set the time there.

Where do you see the setting for "DST"?

The PalmOS does not have a built in DST feature and that is why there a re quite a few third-party applications out there that will make this switch for you.

I'm feeling kind of silly right now because that was really easy and I missed it. Duh. Thanks for your help.

By the way, cute name!

I wondered about this- the application "City Time", when you create a new city, asks about DST- auto or manual, and when you want it to change.

So, if it is not 'hooked up', why does it ask this?

As far as the DST hack goes, after some glitches a few months back, I am pretty hesitent about all hacks. Resetting the time is easy enough for me!

However... didn't I see a few programs that are set up to sync the time during the hot sync? Anyone know what they might be?

Because Handspring, in their infinite 'wisdom', evidently didn't implement that feature in their licensed version of CityTime. It's another bonehead decision like the fact that you can't beam appointments from within DateBook+

It also makes a difference in terms of hour-shifts. In fact, I'm willing to bet that if you checked CityTime for your own city after the DST switch (but before you actually changed your visor), it would display the correct time for your home city...

How so?

Unless you're defining 'check[ing] CityTime' drastically different than I do, you'd lose that bet. Having to do much more than _open_ CityTime is already making it useless for me since Prefs is just as close.

Nope. I did that first and had to change the time manually because the time for my home city was still an hour slow.

Ah, well. at any rate, time zones get odded by DST, and CityTime needs to know whether or not they should be +6 or +7 (or whatever) from Grenwich. I had a suspicion that CityTime might know better, but I guess it depends too much on the home clock..

...I wonder what would happen if you told citytime your home city was Greenwich??

hurf?

Um...you tell it that when you originally set it up. DST shouldn't 'odd' it. Example: I'm in the US Central Standard Timezone (CST). This is -6 hours from GMT. If I tell it I use DST and it should activate it on the first Sunday in April and deactivate it on the last Sunday in October, then it should know that CDT = GMT-5, or +1 relative to the time it was before (CST = GMT-6).

I still don't understand what you're on about here. The 'home clock' is irrelevant. CityTime on the Visors is broken. The real version works correctly from what I gather.

It would do the same thing it does on any other time zone, nothing.

What do you mean by 'check[ing] time'? Opening the program? Tapping some hidden menu option? Sunday morning when I awoke (~8:00CDT), I started the task of changing the couple clocks which I didn't change the night before. One of these was my Visor. I opened the flip and powered it up. Time was not changed automatically as expected (meaning that I expected it not to have changed just as none of our three visors have changed automatically). I first went to my 'System' category and tapped CityTime. OK, home city showing correctly in the upper right hand corner. Time still wrong. Edit cities. Hmm...home city showing correct DST paramaters and Lat/Lon and DST set to 'auto'. Bah. Tap home button. Tap Prefs (which is also in the 'System' category). Tap Set Time. Tap up arrow. Tap OK. Tap home and return to 'Data' category. I didn't count the taps for CityTime, but I'm sure that anything more than tapping CityTime to open it isn't saving me much.

Well, it was a nice thought.

Just move to Arizona. We don't have daylight savings time here, so all of your problems would be solved!

$DEITY knows that _I've_ considered it before.

Lessee...

Twice a year, I have to reset most of the clocks in the house, including the one built into my Visor (although it SHOULD do this on its own). For 1/2 the year, over the summer, time is artifically shifted for one hour so that when the sun is directly overhead in the middle of a time zone, it is 1:00 p.m. by the clock- even though the sun being overhead is supposed to be the definition of noon.

Supposedly we do this because it saves energy- although there don't seem to be any really good, non-biased studies to support that we save enough to make a big difference. It also seems to me that any savings in the AM is offset by the hour earlier PM and vice versa, and that in our current society, people are on such odd schedules that I can't see that it really matters a lot anyway.

AND a lot of countries and states don't do it at all, which has got to make interstate/international commerce even odder than it already is.

Hmmm... maybe instead of trying to fix our PDA's, we should be trying to stop this farce altogether!

actually..

think about it: if we didn't make the DST time shift, in Philadelphia on June 21st the sun would be coming up around 2:28am (3:28am DST)

Unless you live in a basement or have REALLY good blinds, I'm not going to wake my sorry butt up THAT early in the AM!

If you want to double-check, go to city time on your PDA and do the -S shortcut.

I know how that works! When I was in Japan, it was June and my hotel room was on the east side of the building, oooh, about 40th floor. Nothing like full blown daylight at about 4:00 am! (especially after a few Asahi's the night before ).
