New Visor for 9th Grade Student

Hello Everybody,

I have been following this board off-and-on for the last two years (?) with the intentions of purchasing a Visor, and finally, on my Vacation, I bought one (refurbished) for $ 100.

I'm going to be entering 9th grade - high school - next Thursday, and wanted to know if there are any recommended accessories (software, cases) for students...I already purchased a pack of WriteRights, and plan on purchasing a Rhinoskin Slider Case (Aluminum) for protection in my backpack.

How do the Visors (or any PDA) help you in school?
Do you get any problems from staff because of them?
Is there any way to modify the letters for graffiti? (be able to write them differently?)

I would recommend a stowaway keyboard. It makes taking notes on the visor much easier.

I'm a high school student myself using a visor, and usually I had no problems from the teachers once I explained what it is and what I do with it (write down homework, take notes) and got across the fact that it's not a gameboy. Most of my teachers last year weren't very tech-savvy and were in awe of it every time I take it out along with the keyboard. So I don't think you will have a problem with it, unless you abuse it and play games all the time on it. But be ready with an explanation of what it is.

ImagiMath a suite of math programs (www.imagiworks.com) which includes a full function calculator, ImagiGraph, ImagiSolve, a math worksheet. $39.95



BoneUp (www.palmgear.com) create your multiple-choice, true-or-false and flash card questions. $10.00



I got these suggestions from an article in the New York Times by Jeffrey Selingo.



I would also get TealDoc. Many of the books you will be asked to read are in the public domain (no copyright) and many of them are available free for the downloading. You could then read your assignments on your Visor.



I second the recommendation of getting a Stowaway keyboard. Essential for long periods of notetaking and for writing assignments.

Maybe this would be a good thread to bring out our recommendation for good software and accessories for students (middle- and high-school, though I guess you could include college as well). Here are mine:

4.0student
I think this is the best assignment tracking software available. You might could try Due Yesterday and A+ along side it and see which one works best for you.

Wordsmith
I shall make a proclimation that shall be heard here and perhaps elsewhere. I have decided that I will do all EN 101 assignments completely on my Visor using Wordsmith (with the exception of printing which must still be done using Word because I do not yet have a printer with an IR port or an IR adapter). This program is that good. Pretty much everything that one needs to do with a word processor, at least for a student anyway.

Stowaway keyboard
A must if you want to do follow me in my goal of doing all essays and papers using Wordsmith. Sure, GoType! is alright but Stowaway is much smaller when folded and has a much larger Wow factor than the GoType. The only other keyboard I could think of getting is one, and I don't quite recall its name, that would cover the bottom portion of the Visor, replacing the silk area and the hard keys.

A few document readers
Get a few document readers. Make sure to cover all your bases when it comes to e-books. Thats another thing. I will try to get all required books for EN 102 online and put them in some format on my Visor. Plus, I have found that I pick up the weirdest stuff to read and put it on my Visor, from a complete history of Austria to a timeline of the world from the big bang to 6 months ago. The latter takes up 6 MB on my SM card. Along with this recommendation, become well aquainted with memoware.com . For any books they don't have, pickup your document readers' converters in the "making files" section of Memoware and try to find it elsewhere on the web like at Project Gutenberg. Some recommendations for programs include: Wordsmith (as I already recommended), CSpotRun (small and free but I only use it because it came with MemPlug), TomeRaider (I use this for HUGE documents), and iSilo (documents with images).

Noah Lite (or Pro)
This is perhaps the best dictionary available. I like it for its choices in dictionary size and for its support for external memory (though you need Noah Pro for this which costs $20).

SlovoEd
If you take a foreign language course, a dictionary is a must. This is the one that I use and I really like it.

QuizApp
Helps you study various topics. I use it to help study French verbs.

Conjugator
In speaking of French verbs, I use this program to conjugate verbs but again this all depends on what language you are taking.

I hope this helps any student trying to get the most out of their Visor at school.
