-- Platinum or Edge? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=13750)

I own a IIIxe and I'm considering buying a new pda. I'm considering Platinum and the Edge. Is the Edge worth $100 more then the platinum? I like the metal of the edge but I like the form of the platinum. Also if you could tell me what options of memory springboard modules are out there and what price range they are in I would appriciate it.

Have never used a Handspring product, how do they compare to Palm function wise?

If you are even thinking about using some type of memory module, I would say go with the Platinum. Having the module on the Edge defeats it's purpose. Besides, with the Platinum, you can use all the available Visor accessories such as keyboards, cases, styli, etc.

As for memory modules, there's the 8 ($80) and 16MB ($140) Flash modules, while being the most expensive per MB, allow you to run some programs directly from the module.

Then there's the MemPlug (~$50), which includes a JPEG viewer and Doc reader that lets you look at JPEGs and DOCs directly off the module. It also includes backup software so you can backup your Visor on the road. You would need to purchase seperate SmartMedia cards (going for ~$1/MB on Amazon) in addition to the module.

Finally, are the two CF adapters and the CF module. Now that the CF module is available, there is no reason to buy one of the CF adapters that contain no onboard software. The NxDrive (~$50) is basically the same thing as the MemPlug without the JPEG or DOC software.

The thing about the MemPlug and NxDrive is that you can't run software directly from the module. You would need to copy the program to main memory and then run it. In addition, you also need to have enough free main memory on your Visor to copy the program.

I would recommend the MemPlug over the NxDrive because of the addition software it comes with and the fact that SmartMedia is cheaper than CompactFlash. Between the MemPlug and the Flash Modules is your decision: Will you be filling the module up with docs, reference materials, etc? Then go with the MemPlug. Or will you be adding lots of programs? Then go with one of the Flash Modules.
