Unhappy

Hey all--

I am frusrated with this darn thing. Got a ThinModem yesterday. Pulled out my Flash module, put in the ThinModem as described in the instructions. The screen refreshes and takes me to the General Prefs screen. No beeping. Nothing else. I looked on the list of programs screen, and no ThinModem program can be found. I took out and reinserted the ThinModem -- again the same thing. I tried a soft reset to help clear any conflicts, no change. I exchanged my ThinModem for a new one at Staples, no change. I tried to upgrade the software to v1.4 from CardAccess-inc.com, but the program said it could not recognize the modem, and if I tried to upgrade it said that the version on the module is newer than the upgrade I downloaded. For kicks, I tried dialing in with the modem to Earthlink, but the Modem program in Prefs says that no modem is detected. Does anyone know of any conflicts with the ThinModem? Or does anyone know anything that might help?

Desparately seeking help,
Eric

I'm looking to buy a thinmodem in the near future so I'll be watching this thread.

The real reason for my post is: GO WAHOOS!

Sounds like your Visor is at fault here. The behavior you describe - going to the General Prefs screen - is exactly what happens when the Visor detects a module insertion, but then cannot find any software on the module. This is what happens with the CF adapter module because it has no software ROM on it.

Check the pins of your Springboard connector. Are any bent? Are they all there? NOTE: Some pins will longer and others shorter than most of the pins. This is normal.

Do you have another module you can try out to confirm this? Like a Backup Module?

I had that problem with a Thinmodem. I called the company (http://www.cardaccess-inc.com/)
and they exchanged it. The new one is fine. They were really nice to deal with too.

Cool Here is the solution to my problem.

So I was kinda bummed when my ThinModem did not work out of the box. BUT, after patiently waiting a day or two for customer service to reply to my e-mail I found Visor bliss. Thanks Card Access!!! Apparently my ThinModem came with corrupted software. Not a problem now.

Here is the solution below -- 1st I should mention that I tried to upgrade myself, but it didn't work. The key was in a special button sequence. Good luck.

A. First you need to download the latest version of the Thinmodem code (In
case the copy that you currently have is corrupt). You can do so here:
www.cardaccess-inc.com/thinmodem_downloads.html
B. Then HotSync the Updater to your Visor.
C. Finally, do the following:
1. Press and hold the scroll UP button on the Visor.
2. While holding it, insert the modem.
3. The screen will flash and return to the applications screen. After
inserting, wait a moment then release the UP button.

4. Open the Thinmodem Updater application.
5. When it is open, press and hold the scroll DOWN button on the Visor.
6. While holding the DOWN button, tap the "Update Now" button.
7. Proceed with the update when prompted.

The update will take about 30 seconds. Do not remove the module while the
update is in progress. Your Visor will reset when the update is finished.

Feel free to contact me with questions.
