-- cracked screen and aftermath (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=2938)
Tuesday night I was turning around at my desk to hot sync, bumped my elbow and dropped my Visor on the floor. When I picked it up it had four cracks across the entire length of the screen and would not operate. I called Handspring Customer Support at 10:30pm. They arranged to send me a replacement Visor. The replacement got here this (Thursday) morning, less than 36 hours after I called. I loaded my data into the replacement Visor with the backup module, which appears to have restored all data, and then did a hot sync. Comments: (a) I'm surprised that the Visor screen cracked-it only fell a couple of feet onto a plastic carpet protector; (b) major kudos to Handspring Customer support for getting me a replacement so quickly (Natasha took my call and was very courteous and helpful); and (c) BUY THE BACKUP MODULE AND BACK UP REGULARLY. This is the second time that the backup module has saved me. Also, I scrutinized the replacement unit and my original unit, which I got last October. The only differences that I can see are that the Palm OS symbol re on the back of the lid to the battery compartment on the replacement unit, and the replacement unit comes with a metal stylus.
Hi! PDAs are very delicate babys. I dropped mine from knee high and I even use my foot to take away some of the forces as it came down. Nevermind it cracked!
I found one of the most dangerous position is when you're standing on the subway holding your VDx with one hand. Never do that!
Besides the backup module...you can also save a bit by using Backup Buddy (shareware) to back up your data & programs. Worth trying.
:-)
I've been very blessed so far...I have now dropped my Graphite Visor 6 or 7 times, including the kitchen floor and tiled bathroom floor. (I think I've been clumsy because I laughed at the idea of someone performing a "drop test" on their just-bought Visor.
) There are no cracks, breaks, etc. The unit still works great. I guess it all depends on the angle it hits the ground...
Oh, and yes, I DO have the Backup Module. With all these drops lately, I can't afford to NOT have it.

I too experienced a cracked screen, although not by dropping it, but by....let's say a work accident. I work with aircraft on a day to day basis and we use very heavy external generators to power aircraft systems. Needless to say, a Visor Deluxe does not make a very good chalk :eek
a piece of wood that is placed behind a tire so the equipment won't go anywhere). So lessoned learned and now I'm buying a much better case for when it's in my backpack. No telling what will happen next.
No problem with the replacement, just took a bit of time because I'm overseas. Now with the help of the backup module, I'm up in running in a matter of minutes of the arrival of my replacement. I even have a better stylus at that.
Gotta love that Visor

it seems that the screen can be waaaayyy too easy to crack, a girl i know borrowed my visor for one class period, dropped it from 3 and a half feet up and cracked the screen. Luckily the customer support people at best buy arent the sharpest knives in the drawer so i got a brand shiny new visor free of charge
I cracked my ice (hehe)a while ago. 2.5 ft up and flat on the face. The screen was shattered in a criss cross pattern. I didn't lose any info, but I couldn't turn off my alarms without doing a soft reset.
Like most people, Handspring was great and I received my unit in Canada within the week.
Now I wonder about my new one because it has more fatal exception errors than my first (I didn't have any with my first.) I see a backup module in my future.
