Question

This is something I've been thinking about for some time. In response to announcements about various springboard modules, such as the MP3 or GPS modules, invariably several people question why you would want to integrate this functionality into your PDA via the springboard slot. Aside from carrying one heavier item instead of two lighter items, there are varying degrees of useful integration. If we consider the spectrum from PDAs that don't really need the module (e.g. low-memory module that holds a single app you could have just bought and downloaded into your visor) to modules that don't really need the PDA (e.g. a radio module with no GUI that just uses the visor as a battery), then the best examples of integration lie in the middle, where the module adds some useful new functionality to the visor, and the visor provides something more important than an energy source.

I'm thinking that the eyemod2 is a good example (module adds camera functionality to visor, visor provides viewscreen for taking/reviewing photos/videos, conduit to PC, photo integration with addressbook, e-mailing photos with eyemail or bugme msgr) and maybe the visorphone (module adds phone and modem to visor, visor provides on-screen buttons, call history, speed dial, dialing out of single addressbook, web browser/e-mail client/PQAs, etc.)

What do you think are the best examples of module/visor integration (available, announced, or wished for), where the combo actually makes more sense than two separate, independent devices?

I agree w/EM2. (This is prob. why it's the only model I own -- EM1 actually; I'll prob. get EM2 soon.)
VP is prob. #2. It's prob. no mistake that both of these were close to HS in their dev. They seem to have the best idea of what SBs should do, be (do-be-do-be-do), etc. But I guess it's more cost effective for them to run HS & make new Visor models.
The CF / SM / etc. adapters are huge, too -- tho they don't use the GUI too much, of course.

If I come up w/any "great SB ideas" I'll post 'em....

Oh, a DEADLY one (much-noted already) would be a TV card, esp. if <$100.
This'd prob. permanently shut up the Win'CE bozos who're dl like 1Gb of TV shows / movies onto their PDAs, just because they don't have a TV card (which is obv. more cost-eff.)

Oh yeah, maybe #3 would be the PwrPt presentation module; but it's more a great SB for a biz. user w/a big expense account than your avg. Joe.
