-- VisorPhone usable while removed? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=12409)
I think it would be a great idea to have the VisorPhone still ring when not plugged in. I mean, what if someone is trying to get ahold of you, and you are sitting in the office playing Golf or tracking GPS in the car when they call? I know voicemail is the standard fix-all. But what happens if it is really urgent? I think that if the phone could still ring, it would give you long enough to unplug what you were doing, and plug in the phone so that you could answer the call.
Just my 2 cents worth!

VisorPhone can ring out of the Visor
You can get the Visor phone to ring only if you plug it on the Good Technology Energy clip.
This way you will be aware when someone is calling you.
However you cannot take a call. There is no microphone on the Energy Clip and the "take a call" button does not operate while on the energy clip.
To get this to work, you have to cut one side of the plastic from the Energy clip this way you can insert the VisorPhone in it and switch it on.

OK, this sounds interesting. So it rings and then what? Can you plug the Visorphone into the Visor without losing the call? For $40 it runs the Sounds Good for 6 hrs on 1 AA battery AND has a belt clip. Can you give more info on how to modify the Energy clip?

The V-Phone has its own power but it does not switch on without the right siignals going into it.
The Energy Clip is fairly sophisticated from an electronics stand point, it is not just a battery and a connector.
It seems to send the right signals to the Visor Phone to allow you to switch it on.
Also when the phone rings, you have no time to unplug the visor phone from the EC and plug it into the Visor to answer (I think you have no time to do that)
If you go fast however the power stays on on the Phone and it does not loose its signal.
The key issue for me is that if the person does not leave a message you have no way to know who called as the caller id memory is within the Visor, there is no such memory in the phone.
Hope this answer your questions!

The modification is purely mechanical
The EC is sealed so that you have to be carefull when you put it appart.
On one side you need to make a cut to accomodate the large space occupied by the phone battery. Then you glue all back together. all done and the MP3 player still works.
You do that at your own risk. You only risk to waste $40...
Unless you burn the EC electronics with statics and then it damage the phone in turn...
good Luck!

So idea time I suppose!!!
Hopefully someone at Handspring sees these posts. We (hopefully I can speak for a lot of people here) need the phone to still ring when outside the Visor. We need to know a new call is coming in so we can stop what we are doing, install the VisorPhone module, and take the call. We do not want our Visors to be dedicated cell phones... especially those of us who use our Visors for other things. But we also need a dedicated cell phone... as some of us depend on our phones for business. So please, make it possible for all this to happen in another version of the phone!
Thanks,
Your dedicated loyalists
(well, me atleast)

Quite Humorous
I find this thread to get right to the heart of a key issue with VisorPhone: Why would you purchase a Visorphone and then look for a means of running a Visorphone without a visor? Isn't this solution known as a separate cell phone?
Given you can hook up a visor to a whole host of cellphones today, you have a lot more options than a Visorphone adapter. Do a quick inventory:
1. Visorphone alone: Reasonably small and compact. All-in-one solution. Springboard slot unavailable.
2. Visor phone with external adapter. Two pieces of equipment to carry around (three actually since the main reason you would remove the phone is to use the Springboard slot - so add another springboard to your inventory).
3. Visor and phone (IR). Two pieces of equipment. Requires IR capable phone. Phones generally available that are the same size or smaller than a Visorphone-powerpack combo would be. Requires a steady hand (or table) to keep the IR connection.
4. Visor and phone (cable). Same as #3 plus a custom cable to connect the two (0.5 ounce, ~9 inches for mine). Springboard slot available.
With all these choices you can certainly find one that's available today without resorting to a Rube Goldberg solution that runs counter to common sense (i.e. an "external" visorphone!

I question: If you want to be able to use the visor phone outside of they visor, then what's the point?

I can see at least hearing it ring when it's not in the visor.

Yeah, all they're asking is to have the thing ring while they use another Springboard. We're not talking about the capability to talk on it or have a dial pad on the thing.
I'd say a great thing would be something that 1) allowed it to be ring and 2) has a tiny lcd to display caller ID. I'd imagine this would be pricey however, and bring the price of the Visor Phone even higher.

However, one of our developer partners is building an attachment to the VisorPhone which will allow the VisorPhone to be used to receive and make calls when it's outside of Visor.
I think I read somewhere that Hanspring is working on a device that the Visorphone would mount in that would make it work as a stand-a-lone cell phone. It would probably be something like a keypad and microphone with a springboard slot. (way oversimplified I'm sure).
It actually makes good sense. I mean, your Visorphone is a great springboard module, but if it's not your ONLY springboard module, then there will be times when it's not installed on your Visor. During these instances, it would be great to mount it in this other device and maintain all the functions of a cell phone.

People could also by a cheep auxliry visor (solo) that would be dedicated to their visor phone, it would proved all that would be needed, and it gives you a backup visor if your prism needs to be charged or repaired.
