-- Can't hotsynch- please help (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=2425)
anyone there, i've been hotsynching with no problems for 2 months today i successfully hotsynched and tried again and i keep getting the cannot make connection prompt. i'm running win95 with a serial cable. i haven't changed any settings so this is strange. i've done a soft reset on the visor and rebooted the computer. please help and thank you

I had the same problem w/my Mac notebook. HS tech support told me my serial port was bad, even though it obviously isn't (I can still print through it). Anyway, they told me they would send me a new serial cradle. I am currently on hold with them asking why I haven't received it yet (been 2 weeks!) Call the 888 # on their web site and start complaining. Be prepared to sit on hold a long time. At least you don't have to pay (if you call tech support directly it's not an 888 #).
Best of luck. Let me know what you find out.

Dan,
thanks for the reply got through to customer service in 2 minutes and tech concluded that my serial cradle is shot. transfered me to service and waited 25 minutes how ironic. service putz said 7-10 business days and now i hear from you that its been 2 weeks. so now what i have is a wonderful address book with no way of using it for its purpose. let me know what you find out. thanks again
jim
How did you determine serial cradle was shot? I can still get some signal from it when monitored with a terminal emulator. Soft resets didn't work for me, nor did changing baud rate
Dan,
the tech took me through the following steps (which were on this bb) soft reset, reset baud rate, changed com ports, checked settings. uninstalled desktop software and reinstalled all without doing a thing. it seems to me that there shooting into the dark this cradles fine i used it in the morning and this afternoon boo its shot according to the monkey boys. if you have any suggestions let me know - i need to get the cradle so i can return to my normal work life
I went through all the soft reset, hard reset, reinstall stuff with them via email, then was told to call. They said "bad serial cradle" and my new one should be here in 7-10 days also. It sounded to me like all the cradles are going back lately. They weren't surprised at all.
Hey, there are problems with the serial cradles. I figured it out because I have two computers, home and office. One cradle worked fine at the office, but the other didn't work at all at home.
I swapped the cradles, and the one that worked at the office worked at home. The home one that didn't work, didn't work at the office either. SURPRISE!! duh.
Called Support. After 1/2 hour they told me they would send me a new cradle. Two weeks later, nothing. Called back to tech support. They said they had no record of my call, and said they would send me a new one FedExp. OK, so it arrived 4 days later, but that wasn't too bad. And the new one worked. No problem.
I'm not surprised that you're having serial cradle problems. Seems not too unusual. Hang in there, though. A great unit. I LOVE IT.
;-)

What kind of printer are you using? most of the printers use parallel port, not serial port.

I'm using a Mac notebook; it has one serial port and I have it hooked up to a HP Deskwriter (Deskjet for mac) 540.
USB-problem
Before I had to reinstall Windows 98 I didnt have any problem to sync. But after Windows was reinstall it doesnt work at all!
Ive soft reset the Visor, but that didnt seem to help.
I really need some help to solve this problem!

Quila,
You probably need to re-install the Visor software from the CD... at least the USB drivers...

Try to remove the entry VID_082D&PID_0100 from your registry, it's somewhere under the entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Enum/USB (the exact steps are mentioned somewhere on this board, just search for 'USB' and 'hotsync'). After that try to sync, if it still doesn' t work, just run the hardware detection again. This worked fine for me - at least for the next 3 days, but this is another story...
BTW, be careful when deleting something in the registry (but I assume that you know what you are doing...)

Ive soft reset the Visor, but that didnt seem to help. And also reinstalled the Handspring software on my computer.
Ive tested to hotsynch, with my cradle, at a friends computer and it worked fine.

Nice to see that someone has an idea to solve this problem. I have to admit that I dont really know what you mean. Eg. try "to remove the entry xxx from your registry". What registry?!

The Registry of Windows 95 and 98 stores a lot of information about your system, your hardware and software. There is also an entry regarding the USB port configuration.
This entry seems sometimes to be screwed up - I don't know how that happens. It happened to me twice and by deleting the entry and then hotsyncing again I got it to work again.
To modifiy your registry you need a program called "regedit", just use the search-function of windows, it should be somewhere in your windows-directories. Then run regedit and delete the entry I mentioned above. But ONLY delete this entry when you are sure that it is the right one! Do NOT delete a similar entry. Anyway, it should not be too hard to find. There are one or two threads somewhere around here dealing with this topic. Just click on the "search" link at the right top part of the website and search for "USB" and "registry".
But my earlier posting above pretty much tells you what to do. If you feel a little uncomfortable modifying your registry then simply call Handspring Tech Support, they will walk you through the process step by step.
good luck!
Markus
Markus, thanks for all your help! Finally it works to hotsynch again!
Thanks!!!
