-- nokia 8290 IrDA with Visor Deluxe (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=9628)
Please help...anyone tried using the nokia 8290 with VDLX to go online? How do you setup the visor to work with the phone?
Any help, greatly appreciated.
I'm currently using the 8290 with my vdx on VoiceStream. I posted a short explanation on how I did it using irlink. I've read that irlink isn't needed, but I haven't tooled around too much since I have no problems with my current setup. Check out this link.
Be sure to follow the directions included with the irlink.
LMidnight,
That's really cool. Now I need to find out if irLink will work on my Prism....
You Don't Need IrLink w/Prism
Hi,
I've been using my Prism with an 8290 for the last week with no additional software to connect the two. When you set up your network connection, just choose "IR to Modem" for the link. Remember, this is one of the functions of Palm OS 3.5, which the Prism runs. It works great.
Specifically, here's what to do: You go into your Preferences->Connection area; create a new connection; call it "Nokia" are whatever; copy the initial string from the Palm Modem connection (AT&FX4) in the inital string of your Nokia connection; again, make certain the connection method is set to IrCOMM to Modem; tap OK.
When setting up your Network settings (ISP), choose Nokia as your modem (Connection).
I'll have to try it. Thanks!
That's true BNelson. The VDX has an older version of the Palm OS (pre 3.5) that doesn't support the IR functions needed to connect to the phone. Since that's the case, you shouldn't need irlink.
Sorry I missed that.
Oops!
Sorry for thinking this thread was about connecting a Prism to the 8290...it's a Deluxe you guys are talking about. Sorry! Yes, I realize the Deluxe has the older OS.
thanks for many responds...
Since I am using the Visor Deluxe, I have just updated the IRenhance from Palm but do I need to use IRlink or gsmtool to connect? Also, on my 8290 setup, do I need to enter a specific number in the "message center number" field or is that where i enter my ISP number?
I'm using IrLink to connet. GsmTool is used just to send phone numbers and sms messages to the phone.
If you download IrLink and read the pdf, it explains all the details and cautions concerning the irenhance upgrade. You only have to install a couple of the irenhance upgrade.
As far as the 8290 setup, there's nothing special you have to do except activate the infrared when you're ready to connect. The phone automatically switches to data mode and acts like a modem. You will need to setup a network profile under the system prefs on your vdx. That part is just like seting up a script on your pc. That's also where you specify your isp number.
btw I'm posting this with with my vdx/8290. Good luck.
thanks, LMidnight. I'll try that later. There seems to be some problem with the eval. version of Irlink downloaded from there site.

okay, so I finally got my 8290 and visor to work but only with IRlink installed. The visor alone can't connect without it. The only drawback to go online this way is the connection speed. The maximum connection rate for a GSM network is 9600bps. It took forever for me to sync my avantgo and would probably cost me $4 bucks each time. Considering, PacBell charge $4.95/month for Data Connect feature and 15 cents per minute. This would eventually be just a luxury to use. I guess the only other way for wireless connection would be Omnisky/Yada/GoAmerica but their services are spotty at best.
Anyway, thanks for those who helped.
p.s. Whats the best browser to use beside the avantgo?
