-- Platinum 16 Shade GrayScale Flickering/streaking (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=11694)
Well I just bought my wife a platinum and the 16 shade color display blows. I've exchanged it 3 times at Staples and all three have the same exact problem. Specifical I get streaing dark or light lines the entire vertical length of the screen in various locations (always the same locations in a given image). The streaks flicker various shades of grey.
Have any platimum users noticed some really poor quality displays using Firepad and or Chrome? There is a few threads on the VisorVillage site that discuss this but I hav'nt seen any here, with my exact symptoms.
I have tried adjusting the contrast, Overclocking, and the various no streak hacks. With the right combo I can get either streaking + shadowing, or sever flickering. Tough choice, huh.
And I was so happy with Handspring after the flicker on my prism went away with the mysterious SG fix.
Do other people have good 16 shade grey displays? Was it just a bad lot of screens?
Do this. Go to http://www.palmgear.com and download the new hackmaster (I think it's called X-Master) and look for a hack called "no streak hack". This should fix your problem.
As mentioned above I have done this and it did not work. There are a bunch of "No Streak" type hacks written for the IIIx and Palm OS 3.1. They basically mess with the refresh rate, so you can eliminate streaking, but you get a worse sparkling/ and flickering effect, or you can set the refresh really low and get streak/shadowing but limited flickering.
Does anyone have a platinum with a high quality 16 bit display?
In the other discussion there was around 15 people who "Reported" the exact problem I have (and even with replacement units from handspring).
Try the SG fix for the Prism to adjust the contrast and brightness.
Set the date to Jan 1 1904
Save it
Hold down the power button until the brightness switch comes on. Then adjust it. I do not have a VPL so it may be that the brightness is on the silk like on the VDX. Whatever, this adjustment of the contrast may fix the flicker and streaks.

Thanks but The SG fix dosn't do anything on platinum. I have also tried installing afterburner and overclocking the processor, some people have said this worked for them. It did imporve it slightly but not signigicantly.
I too was really unhappy with my Platinum. Many 3rd party apps had streaking and shimmering effects going on. I returned it and got myself a Prism. Never am I going back. The color screen is too clear and easy to read for me to return to the world of monochrome.

Update
Well I've exchanged my wife's platinum 2 times at staples and 2 of my co-works have purchased platinms of their own. All of these units ( 5 total now) have the same flickering problem /(or big time streaking/shadowing when using the "No streak/afterburner hacks).
I havn't seen one with a good display, I'm wondering if the Platinum just has a hardware deficiency. Has anyone ever seen a good 16 shade image on their platinum (using fire pad or similar program)?
