I browsed the palm website and the current version of Palm Desktop is 3.0.3. The version that came with my VDX is 3.0.1.
Can I upgrade or do I have to wait for a Handspring "certified" upgrade?

You need to wait. The version on the Palm site doesn't have USB support built into it. Now if you connect via a serial cradle, then that's a different story.

Actually, you have the latest version. If you click on the link at the Palm site, you will see this text:

Palm� Desktop Software v3.0.3
NOTE: This software installs Palm� Desktop 3.0.1. The version of HotSync� Manager installed is version 3.0.3.

And that version of the hotsync manager is NOT compatible with the Visor.
