Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm confused.
In the past, you seem to have expressed scorn for the various models of Visor due to a perceived lack of innovation as compaired to other Palm and PocketPC models.

Yet here you are, a pioneer purchaser of a new model Visor who's only advantage over the Platinum seems to be a snazzy looking case.
Please enlighten my confusion. Inquiring minds want to know what features made your decision.

My main criticism was directed at Palm devices in general, which haven't really changed significantly over the past few years. I owned Palms for around 3 years, so they have, at times, become rather boring. My interest in Pocket PC devices is pretty much over, I've been there...done that! They do have many innovative features such as digital audio and higher resolution displays, but I see no reason why Palm developers can't move in this direction...which they seem to be doing. I'd like them to move faster in this direction though!

Well the Palm V had no technical advantages over the III & VII series, and yet the V has been their hottest seller. I was never interested in the Platinum because it merely has a painted plastic shell rather than anodized aluminum. As a former Vx user...I've been spoiled by metal. In my opinion, both the Platinum and Prism should have metal cases rather than painted plastic. Just my opinion.

The Edge is still priced higher than I would have liked. I was really hoping that HS would set a new trend by under-cutting Palm as they did with the Visor Deluxe. They may yet do that once the Palm models hit the shelves.

Was it worth the purchase? It was for me, and even if these new M500s are "killer" products, I can always send my Edge back (HS has a 30 day return policy), and get a Palm.

We'll see

Unhappy First Visor

After using a Palm V for almost 2 years, I decided to try a Pocket PC, a Casio EM-500 to be exact and sold my Palm V on EBay. Now that I have had it for a few months and the ooowwww and aaaahhhh effect is over, I thought about going back to a Palm again. I missed the Palm and found that I never use the extra features (MP3,Voice recording, etc.) of the Casio.

Anyway, after seeing the Edge, I thought that this was what I needed to get me back into using a Palm again. This is my first Handspring product. I ordered it on Tuesday and in less then 24 hours, had my new Edge in my hand. I was impressed. After inspecting the Edge, I noticed that there was a hole on the left side of the unit. There was NO cover over the IR! just a hole where I could see the inside of the edge. I looked in the box to see if it had popped pot but I could not find one.

I then went on-line to look at some pictures of the unit to make sure that the IR actually had some type of cover. I figured it did or this thing would fill up with dust quickly!

I then called Handspring customer service and told the girl who answered about this problem. She could not belive that this had happened and said she would overnight me a replacement unit. I knew I would be home today so I asked her to send it to my home address. I held off loading up my new Edge with software last night figuring I would just have to do it all over again today.

I just called HS just now to see if I could get a tracking number of my replacement and was told that it has not shipped yet. I explained to her that the girl I spoke with yesterday assured me a replacement would be overnighted. This person told me that this was not true and that a replacement would take 3-5 days to process!

When I told her that she was going to have to change the shipping address (to work) now since I was home today but would be a work tomorrow and next week so I would not be home to sign for the package. I was told that it was too late to change the shipping address. After I explained again that I would not be home to sign for it but I could sign for it a work, she put me on hold for almost 10 minutes! She came back and said she could manually change the address, so I gave her my work address.

Not sure how I feel about my first HS purchase. I really thought about just returning this unit and waiting to see what Palm will be offering next week. Is this the usual for HS customer service?

Thanks for letting me vent a little!

Arrow Had a bad experience

I think you had a bad experience with a dimwit agent. Handspring support has improved significantly since the fiasco in 1999/early 2000.

That seems a bit odd. I think you must have had the bad luck of getting someone new or something. I called Saturday afternoon to see about getting a replacement for my Ice VDx due to some cracks in the case. My replacement arrived Tuesday (which is overnight when you consider they wouldn't have been able to ship until Monday). Don't let that one experience sour you on Handspring.

DPW:

Im currently living in Malaysia. Over the last six months Handspring has shipped a new Visor Deluxe to me *twice* (first time because of a cracked screen; second time because the resolution was all screwed up). Both times the new VD arrived in three days. THREE days!

I am extremely impressed with Handsprings customer service. Dont give up on them just yet.

The same scenerio happened in November of 1999 when I ordered my Visor and there was all that 'bad customer service' going on. The result? A couple of 'free' visors.

I called back to change my address and ended up getting a visor at both locations....only 1 was charged....about a month later another one showed up...again uncharged.

i waited for awhile after that, thinking i was on some sort of 'visor-a-month' plan but that was it, the well ran dry.

Good Luck!!

Well, I received my replacement today. Of course it was sent to my house instead of my work address as I requested, but at least I got it! I kind of figured that would happen.

If you read my earlier post, you know that all I was missing from my original Edge was the small red cover that snaps over the infra-red port. I asked if they could send just the cover but was told that they had to send out a replacement unit. Instead of re-loading all of my apps to the replacement, I took out my jeweler's set of screwdrivers and popped of the IR cover off of the replacement and popped it onto my original Edge. It was very easy to do.

So I plan on sending back the replacement minus the IR cover. Do you think HS will have a problem with that?

Yeah...I'm not so sure I'd do that. They'll be expecting your Serial number back. If they realize you opened the units, your warranty may be void. Simply changing barcode stickers doesn't help either...the units' ID is burned into ROM. You can chance it if you like (and they probably wouldn't complain) but if you like your warranty, I'd reload the apps.

Big bummer.

If I know Thnk Outside correctly.. We probably will be seeing a Edge version of the Stowaway this year. Palm platform comptuers, are there biggest seller, so.

Though.. When.. ooo that's tough.

I did not open the unit, I just popped the red IR cover off of the replacement and snapped it into mine. Sorry if I did not make that clear.

For some reason, I don't think that tehy would notice all that much if you did that. I think that there getting so many of these things back that they can't check the serial numbers on all of them. Now, if you gave them some reason to check, then maybe it would be a different story.....

They do check the serial numbers

I think you would be better to use a backup module to move the data. HS do check the serial numbers for a return and, just from a help out others perspective, it should be easier for them to check where the glitch happened in manufacture if they have the right number for the faulty one. I mixed up battery doors on a retun before for a Dx and they contacted me about it.

You could beam all your data between them. (Assuming the IR functions without the cover.)

Foo,
I believe on the HS site, the specs note "SPEAKER" for the Edge.
You state the sound is extra-loud for the Edge -- is this kind of one of the "hidden" features of this model; that it has an actual speaker?
Maybe if you try to play sounds w/one of the apps that does this (TealMovie comes to mind), you'll be able to tell for sure.
Thx.

No, it's not a real speaker. It's still the same piezzo buzzer found on existing Palm devices..but this one is quite loud. So it is an improvement. I'm still dreaming of the day I can load MP3s onto my Palm/Visor, without having to purchase an expensive "add-on".

I just gt my Blue VE charging it now! I think the blue looks better in hand than the pictures. I did not realize that the cover was anodized on the inside. As reported earlier the cover only opens up approx. 270deg. will let you know how it is when it is charged. After Charging whick took 60 min. it has been working great I used my Backup module to transfer all of my stuff from my GVDX it is working great. One of the interesting things about the VE is that the power supply connects to the aft side of the male USB plug. I have been carrying it in my back pocket like James and it is thin enough that you don't seem to set on it. I will get a case an carry it some other way. The screen seems to be crisper. The cover is stiff enough to give plently of protection. The silent alarm feature does not seem to be that noticable with the cover on. When the LCD flashes all you see is the side around the cover, so unless you were looking for the flashes i don't know that you would notice them. I found this out during the initial charge. The stylus does rattle some but it is not that noticable. These are just some of my observation for the short time that I used the VE more later.
