Thumbs up It will work with MOST VDX, but you can exchange...

From the Handspring site (http://www.handspring.com/support/ts_glenayre.jhtml):

quote:

I heard that my Visor wont support wireless modules because of RF (radio frequency) interference, is this true?

Some Visor Solo, Visor, or Visor Deluxe handhelds may not perform optimally with two wireless communications Springboard modules. These include the Glenayre @ctiveLink and Novatel Minstrel S modules. Handspring has worked closely with these developer partners to optimize the performance of the combined solution of the Visor handheld and module. If a customer uses the handheld and module together and is not satisfied with the communication performance, Handspring is offering a free Visor advance exchange unit. Details are packed inside the box of the Glenayre @ctiveLink and Novatel Minstrel S modules.

Basically you can just exchange your current VDX for a new one...Sounds good to me!

Anywho, I've ordered my Minstrel, and I can't WAIT to get chunking along with the super slow 19.2kbps connection. Hopefully my SDSL won't have spoiled me TOO much and I'll still be able to enjoy the main reason I bought the Visor in the first place (wireless access).

Cool kyakboy - Can you use TELNET/FTP/IRC?

Kyakboy, glad to know that Visor is working with Yadayada wireless. I wonder whether you have tried telnet or IRC on the wireless service yet. Yadayada's service man told me that I could do it but I'd like someone who is using it to confirm it. Appreciate if you can answer my quesiton.

Question $100.00 Rebate - Too Late!!?

I just got off the phone with yadayada.com. I was told that the $100.00 rebate for current VDX owners who upgraded to one of the new visors has been cancelled. If anyone has a contact who will still honor the $100 rebate, please let me know -- [email protected]. Thanks,

Bill

Exclamation VDX upgrade notice

I was having trouble with the VDX today and could not get to the Telnet or FTP sites. So I will have to let you know tomorrow. Why tomorrow? I 'm getting to that.

I called Handspring to see if they are exchanging the VDX for the 3.5 OS systems. They said yes, but I have to get a coupon from Novatel to exchange the VDX. So I called Novatel and told them I have a VDX with a MinS. He said" You have a what, they aren't even shipped yet." So I come to find out I am the first person to Novatel about this. They have NO coupons, and they don't plan on having them. So I was told to call Handspring back.

I called Handspring and told them the story and they called Novatel while I was on hold. I few minutes later, they took my information, my credit card number and promised me a brand spanking new VDX with OS 3.5 installed tomorrow via FedEx. (Credit card number was needed just in case I didn't return my old on).

So here is the continuing saga of me and my VDX/MinS system.

I will let you know more when I get it work tomorrow.

PS-When the Minstrel S arrives from YadaYada, you don't have to do the Setup Wizard, the MinS is all set to run from when you plug it in. It will find the service and connect to the correct IP address then you are all set to go.

Have fun.

Mike

So it is for sure?

So its for sure that they are exchanging old visors for new units with the 3.5 os installed? Can I send mine in before I buy the minstrel and recieve the new unit earlier you think? Let me know how the new unit turns out.

I had my jaundiced eye on OmniSky, but they pissed me off. Another, less "inflamed," reason to go with YadaYada - despite their name - is the coverage area. Check this out:

If you live within OmniSky's little dots, and don't plan to ever travel outside of them, you might like their service.
Am I reading this wrong or is there really that much area in which OmniSky CANNOT be used? Maybe service is available with roaming charges? Please set me straight if I'm wrong.

verizon coverage are

Are you sure that verizon's coverage are for the Minstrel is the same as their coverage area for their wireless phones? I thought someone said that it uses a different network (which is why it's always on, no dial-up). If we need to find a coverage map for the Minstrel on VZ's network, the one you posted is the map for the voice wireless phones (which is really good )

Much better than their CDPD coverage (which is what would apply to the Minstrel)

Wink VDX YadaYada upgrade update

Got that e-mail from YadaYada I was waiting for. If you purchase a Minstrel S through YY, you will recieve a coupon good for exchanging your current VDX OS 3.1 for a new VDX 3.5 from Handspring.

You will have to call HS with the coupon number and your credit card (to cover their butt if you keep both) and they will send you the updated VDX. I also heard an un-official rumor (someone correct me if I am wrong) that the new VDX are flash upgradable.

Seeya.

With your link, I was going to go with Yada Yada, but with the second link posted later it seems omnisky has the better coverage.

This basically amounts to $150 to upgrade the VDx.

I have mixed feelings about this. If they're having an exchange program in this case, why not offer up existing VDx owners an option as well even if they're not currently upgrading. At least sell me a ROM board that I can replace myself. Sheesh.

*taps feverishly into VDx to make note to see Handspring reps in person a Comdex in 10 days or so*

Oops, thanks for pointing that out. And I thought OmniSky's was bad!! I'm on the west coast and Verizon doesn't even have service in my area.

Toby: Thanks for the correct link.

Yeah, sorry about that. Neither are great coverage, but OmniSky looks like the better of the two. I hope the overall coverage areas get better.

Umm...that's only true if you throw away the modem once you get it. What it REALLY amounts to is that people who don't want wireless can't get their OS upgraded, but if they wanted to get a wireless modem anyway (Minstrel S or Glenayre @ctivelink), they can exchange their VDX for a new one with OS3.5 for free.

YY's answer to my inquiry (we have Verizon & AT&T here):

Right now our data base is not showing that your area is covered. Sorry for that. Keep us in mind when Verison or AT&T cover your area with CDPD sevice.

From the thread, it would appear that the best bet for going with YadaYada is by way of the VDX exchange program. It also looks like you will need to educate their sales reps on the existence of this option.

Just to muddy the waters further, here's my experience with trying to buy a YadaYada modem: I called the 800 number, said I was interested in a modem, but I had two concerns. First, was I in their coverage area? I was. Second, I mentioned that I had heard there were some problems with RF interference in the VDX. The sales rep said thatthey would absolutely not work with OS 3.1; only 3.3 (and presumably higher). I admit that I was surprised to hear that, since I had thought that the interoperability problem was due to ardware. The rep also said that some people had claimed to have upgraded their Visors to 3.3, but also indicated that this was not possible or that the upgrade was not to be trusted. He never mentioned an exchange program.

Sorry Charo, I can only relay what they told me

YadaYada has a page for confirming coverage by zip code at

http://www.yadayada.com/DESKTOP/main/coverage.asp

Based on examination of a few test zip codes (Columbia, MO and Austin, TX), it looks like YadaYada coverage allows roaming under both AT&T and Verizon CDPD networks.

Incidentally, Verizon is offering its own plans for PalmOS access - you provide the modem and software, get unlimited internet access on Verizon network, and pay a per-unit (1 kb?) usage fee on other CDPD provider network. The link is

http://www.verizonwireless.com/mobile_ip/index.html
