Guys! Not these applications work(or not work) with PiDirect... This is PiDirect works(or not work) with them. Since Pi software have bugs in move module you will get errors for many applications.
I've thrown just about every application I have at it and it worked very well (with a few catches)..
The few that had issues were ones (i.e. Planetarium) where the databases was trying to be updated, obviously those won't work, but what I did was to move the read only components of these apps to PiDirect.. Moving out the 99% of all the other applications leaves more than enough room to have a few pdb's and the odd prc in memory.
So far I have been pretty happy with PiDirect.

Eric, what exactally did you do to make it work?
Was it as simple and updating the module, making the directory, and copying some apps to the folder?
As soon as I hit enable on my Prism, I got nothing but solid fatal error 'reset'.
With an application like planetarium, I just moved only one file at a time until it stopped working, I found out something like 3 files (I think) had to be left in the visors memory, the rest could be safely moved to the MMC, Other than that, I didn't do anything special.

I have an application called MarkMyScriptures that I am trying to get working. It works fine if I move it all to the MemPlug and just view the contents. However, I would like to be able to add Bookmarks and things. I am going to try the same thing EricG did, by moving one file at a time. This should allow anything that gets written to stay in Internal RAM and everything else on the MemPlug. I will be really happy when the registered version becomes available so we do not have the 10 DB limit.

First, to all of you trolls out there complaining about Beta software, go crawl back under your rock. If you don't want to assist in Beta Testing this software, DON'T USE IT!!! You get to complain just a wee bit if you find a problem with a production copy of something you paid for, otherwise, put a sock in it.
Now, I have just received my MemPlug yesterday. I downloaded v1.4 Updater and installed it. I then formatted the SM card and immediately ran PiBackup. Then I created the \Palm and \Palm\PiDirect folders. I moved the following:
PalmReader (Peanut Reader) and a large (1Mb) Document file
CoPilot flight planning app and a large (1Mb) waypoint R/O database
HandyShopper2 - a shopping list app
Adobe Acrobat pdf file reader and two .pdf files
AVlogbook - a pilot's logbook app
All apps show up in the Palm default Launcher and Launcher-III v2.2
All files show up in BeamPRO v1.3.1
All apps launch from the SM card in a relatively short time
All R/O databases are read almost instantly
I have had not a single Fatal Error.
I give a bucket of kudos to the PiDevelopers for staying on top of these forums and responding very politely to everyone's problems (Beta Test Reports) and acting quickly to get things stabilized. I'm confident they will soon be releasing a solid production version that we can all enjoy. Keep up the good work!

Has anyone tried this with Wordsmith? That is, running wordsmith off of the card and/or accessing docs off of the card using Wordsmith?

How about this, for everyone? MAPOPOLIS(free, BTW), please piDeveloper, you must have read many posts here asking, hoping, and bragging about their trials with Mapopolis. Your website compatiblity says it works. Specifically, explain the procedure/.pdb & .prc placement please? I should tell you, I have tried *every* combination.
*if I could get mapopolis to work, i could hold out again for maybe, 2-3-4 hours before asking for more.

I've had no problems with PiDirect except I had to drop from 42MHz to 41MHz. TealDoc reads docfiles fine. I've had one or two crashes since installing PiDirect but mostly HotSync related. I had those before PiDirect.
Mapopolis works fine with the app on the Visor and the maps on the card.

I've found the Beta of PiDirect to have a few crashes, none requiring a hard reset or total dump.I run my games and docs with CSpotRun from it.
These issues are minor compared to what I've gone through since getting Omnisky in February. (It works about as good as PiDirect Beta does even though it is not Beta and I pay more every month than I expect PiDirect to be, well more hint-hint)
Hey it's Beta and us early enablers ought to enjoy the challenge of a new product to wring out.

PiDirect help
Help! I'm not a tekkie guru, just a mac guy who loves the functionality of macs and my visor prism. I've had so many problems this last week trying to get my MemPlug with smartmedia working. I just keep getting fatal exceptions. I have an 8mb SB module and I really need more memory/storage. I have several bibles and want to add more but just dont' have enough room. I don't want to spend $120 for a 16mb module. Should I send this thing back until the bugs are worked out? Should I keep it and do nothing with it until the bugs are worked out? Can anybody walk me through how to make it work? Thanks. Charles
Charles,
Perhaps if you could be more specific about when and how the fatal exceptions occur. Are you able to see files in PIMover, if you can see them, can you read/write. Do you have a card reader? Some details please and I will try to help.

3 Questions: Backup Compatibility, Re-Formatting, & Directory Creation
PIDeveloper:
I'm not sure if the following backup/restore processes have been rigorously tested between releases.
1. Are backups created in older code releases compatible and can be restored after upgrading to later releases AND can incremental backups using a different level of code be done successfully (and restorable)? I'd imagine that one should back up their systems after upgrading but it is nice to hang on to a backup with preferences that DO NOT include changes that may occur after upgrading to beta code -- just in case. I might need to restore that copy before falling back to a earlier release of the PI software.
I was told that it was necessary to reformat my card using the PI software and that partially accounted for my many backup failures.
2. It is necessary or advised to reformat a smartmedia card again after upgrading the PI code? Are the directories created using PI 1.4 compatible with 1.5?
I was also told on another forum that another reason for my backup failures was that all directories (not just the backup directory) should be created using the PI code and not on a workstation using an adapter. The PI directory creation is pretty slow so I prefer to use the workstation to create directories and load files.
3. What is the accurate info on directory creation with the old and latest release of your code.
