Question

I have been a palm user for quite some time and have now ordered the Visor Deluxe - my question is this: Can I give my old Palm professional to my wife and have her use it with our Palm Desktop software and her Palm Cradle via serial port and Me use the Visor with the same desktop software and the visor cradle ? I would like her to be able to use it and I would not mind the swapping of cradles too much - Any thoughts on the best way to do this or if anyone else has done this.

As a side note- I have read quite a bit on the handspring Visor and have been an avid Palm user ( probably sold 20 of them - Palm Pilots- myself). I believe that this product is best positioned to be a success - Having read a number of comments - it seems that the visor group of users is VERY focused on what they want and are very demanding. This is a good thing as it will make Visor a better product. I think when this hits store shelves the average user will not be as critical as the Power Users that frequent this board - but will like the GPS and MP3 capabilities. Had I not read up on the unit quite a bit before reading the discussion groups I may have waited on ordering. This is a Solid new product and for new people considering - I think it is definitely worth the wait.
Happy Holidays

Assuming that your Visor cradle is USB and that your computer is running Win98 with USB, then you are all set to go! That's exactly the same situation I'm in, having given my old PalmIII to my wife. Just make sure you enable both HotSync methods on the HotSync icon in the taskbar.

First off, you should buy a USB card if you don't already (about $35). Swapping cradles sounds like a pain in the but, and the USB cradle is faster. You also have to be sure to reinstall the hotsync manager using the Visor CD-ROM, since the old software doesn't support USB cradles. But, if you still want to swap cradles, you should still be fine using your current setup.

Compupika:
Don't get me wrong, but I don't think a Palm cradle can fit a Visor, nor a Visor cradle (USB or serial) fit a Palm unit. Therefore, he still needs 2 different cradles - one for each unit - connected concurrently for convenience. Therefore, there is no "pain in swapping cradles". If he is using Win98, then USB for the Visor would be the way to go because of speed and because it doesn't conflict with the Palm cradle which requires a serial com port.

Just to clear it up - I have Win 98 with a pentium 2 with USB Support. I currently have a palm3 with a serial cradle and am going to be hooking up a USB Visor cradle. Do you think that both USB and Serial hotsync can be enabled simultaneously ? Also do you think that the new visor software has a new hotsync manager because the wiring for the serial port is different for the Palm unit and the Visor unit. Thanks for your thoughts and ideas.

If you Right-Click on HotSync Manager you can specify BOTH USB and Serial at the same time.

RWULLNER: As mentioned previously, yes you can have both serial and USB HotSync enabled simultaneously, because that's exactly how my setup is with my wife's PalmIII and my IVDx. Just make sure you don't try to confuse the HotSync by hotsyncing both units at the same time! Also, you'll need to install the new Hotsync and Desktop software for the Visor to enable USB support.
Hope this helps.
