-- 8MB Flash Module and HotSync (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=10100)

Posted by JimboRN on 12-13-2000 10:41 PM:

Just an observation. Each time I HotSync with the 8MB Flash Module in my Visor Prism, the "system syncronization" fails. If I sync with any other module I have (OmniRemote or Backup) or without a module, the "system syncronization" works fine. (Note: I also use MegaLauncher on my Prism) I just thought I'd share that with ya'll. If you have any comments/experience re: this issue, I'd like to hear from ya. Take care. Jim

Arrow Not Uncommon

I am familiar with this issue... It is not uncommon. It is usually not a good idea idea to hotsync with the backup module or flash module in place. Even though they don't transfer info to or from the PC, it seems that the hotsync process can "read" them. This is especially so with the Flash Module.

So how does one back up data on the 8mb Flash module if you can't hotsync with it? I suppose that also makes it useless for Avant Go as well?

I have an 8mb module on the way and was hoping I could use it for Avant Go...

Talking

At this time you must use the built-in application 'File Mover' and manually select the items you want to copy or transfer. At this time AvantGo cannot be written directly to the flash module because the MobileLink conduit is looking to place the data in the Internal memory.

Handspring FAQ

You can backup (using File Mover) as much as you like, but as far as accessing goes, you may run into difficulties.

Test 1 - I can definitely transfer Avanto (app and data) and successfully read off the module. No difficulties here.
I haven't tried submitting a form, but I imagine I must transfer the data back to the Visor and sync Avantgo again to retrieve the form results.

Test 2 - Avantgo (app) installed internally (Visor memory) is not smart enough to search Module memory for the channels (databases.) I'll conclude that it won't work in reverse then either. Testing... correct.

It's not worth my time or space syncing Avantgo, transferring or copying to the Flash module to read it from there, but it will save space for apps that may not run at all from the module.

I wouldn't get discouraged. I'm pleased that I can run full verison colour V-Rally off of the module. That's almost a meg of space. Ziogolf is supercool. I just need to perfect putting. I wouldn't mind a springboard of Golf in colour though, because Zio is pretty big. That leads me to this...

I'd started a response yesterday to the original post but I suppose I forgot to submit. Sir, if you intend on using an app as worthwhile as AvantGo, it's best you get a Visor Platinum or Prism. Once you see the multitude of great (yet memory filling) applications, you may want that extra space 'built-in'. It will also fix that "small doorway" issue you're currently experiencing with your model and module. The choice is yours.

Perhaps MobileLink may be a "module-aware conduit" as the FAQ implies that they exist? Stand by while I test this flash module sync on my deluxe. I don't want to upset my prism. I hope backupbuddy is still my friend after this...

UPDATE

I had to use the Prism because I ran out of AAA life in the deluxe.

I don't quite know what I've done but this is pretty wild.
I've copied libmal and moved MobileLink to the Module. I have the app there too. I've synced AvantGo and I can actually read the channels (databases) synced to the Visor. How odd. So basically I've saved myself about 300K by successfully running AvGo app off of the module, but the channels (approx 900k) do not sync over to the module.

Note: Backup Buddy (if you use it) runs very slowly while syncing with the flash module in the slot.

BackupBuddy will backup any module that is inserted at the time of a Hotsync. It will keep a seperate directory of each module it discovers.

Unhappy

However, BackupBuddy does not intelligently manage more than one of the same SBMs (e.g. if you have two 8MB SBMs, it will always backup to the same directory - it does not distinguish between the two modules).
