Memplug Modules

I just purchased a Prism. I thought about the m515, but it's out of my bracket at the moment and the Prism was a bargain.

Now I want to get a MemPlug but I'm still at somewhat of a loss as to which to get!

I think the choices for me are CF, SM, or SD/MMC.

I'm leaning towards the SD because that does appear to be where the PDA market is heading in terms of removable flash storage. Downside is lack of support for SD-ROM cards and SDIO. Oh well....

Leaning away from CF because the the small projection above the top of the Visor that it has.

Perhaps SM is the compromise?

I do not have any other devices that use flash storage, so sticking with someing I have is not an issue.

There didn't seam to be any good compaison sites that i could find.

I would go with the SD merely because CF and SM are a little past their time. Type II CF Cards (the ones that have lots of storage space, 1Gb and up) are still going strong because of the amount you can fit in that little space, but for the smaller CF cards, people are moving away from them because of size. As far as I can tell, Memplugs don't support the Type II CF card because they require more power because they are actual hard drives crammed in there. SM is also big and is being outphased in digital things because SD is smaller and you can lock the SD cards in the same way you could lock the old floppy disks. That said, SM might be a good path if you don't have any other memory using devices because companies are starting to clear out their stock of SM cards for good prices. However, if, at any time down the road, you plan on purchasing digital devices (MP3 Players, digital cameras, etc.) than I would go with the SD module.

I would go with whatever you are already using in another device and/or have a card reader for.

[A card reader makes using the MemPlug card a LOT easier. You can sometimes get the reader and the memory card at a discount if purchased together.]

I'd go with the MemStick Memplug. Why? So that you can use your MemStick in your new Sony when you decide to switch

As for a card reader. I got this one and I'm very impressed with it. Especially since I got it for about $28 from Dell (on sale). Now it's $39 but there's free shipping until Sunday (7/14/02).
Check it out.

I don't believe the Memplug supports SD, only MMC. I would go with CF as it has greater capacity and is much cheaper--max on SD is 128MB, CF goes up to 1gig. I got a Memplug on closeout and a 128MB CF to boot.

I don't think he's too concerned if CF is a little past its time--he just bought a Prism, which is already in the grave. CF is the most popular memory and I don't see anything replacing it anytime soon.

Also my Memplug with CF inserted fits flush with my Prism.

I have owned both the original SmartMedia MemPlug and now a CompactFlash MemPlug. The CompactFlash MemPlug does fit flush all the way around, so that should not be a problem.

Between the two, CF has the speed advantage but consumes more power. Since you are using the Prism, that should not be a problem. SmartMedia is just a little to slow for me, but I never noticed until I got the CF Version.

The biggest consideration has already been mentioned. Either buy according to what you already own, or buy according to what you might get later.

Considering you like the Palm M515, why not go SD, since you know it will work down the road? Also, if you are thinking of buying a DigitalCamera, go ahead and get an idea of what you like and see what Memory it uses.

Of course, if you have a 6-in-1 CardReader, you may not care.

I can say for certain, the MemPlug is a great product.

I totally agree. SDIO support would be awesome, and breathe new life into our Visor's.

I've got to guess that this isn't going to happen though. SD ROM content cards would be nice as well, but I'd rather have SDIO than SD ROM (If given a choice.)
