Inserting module gives Fatal Alert

Hello:

I'm having problems with my Visor Edge: whenever I insert the Handspring 8mb Flash module, Handspring 8mb Backup module, or my MiniJam, I get a "Fatal Alert". The modules worked problem-free for at least a couple of months - The Edge, by itself and with my ThinModem module, still work fine.

I've tried hard and "power down" resets, and "holding down the Up button when inserting the modules"; none prevent the following Fatal Alerts:

Flash Module: MemoryMgr.c, Line:4450, Invalid chunk ptr
Backup Module: MemoryMgr.c, Line:4390, Invalid handle
MiniJam: MemoryMgr.c, Line:4390, Invalid handle

Any ideas? Thanks.

Take a look at the pins in the insertion slot. One or more may be bent or depressed and not contacting the modules.

Jaws01: Thanks for the reply.

The pins seem to be OK: some are set at different heights, but I think that they are meant to be that way given that the "differences" are symmetrical:

- far left and right sets, and middle set of pins are taller than the rest,
- and both sets of "2nd from the left and right end" has a shorter pin.

Is this the normal state of the pin heights?

Thanks.

visorprismman: I think I've tried all the resets. I've even disconnected the Edge's battery for the "power down" reset - didn't help.

Also, I've just tried my modules in another Visor and they all work. I checked the pin and edge connector specs, of the Edge and the Springboard slot, in the HandSpring Tech. Ref. - they seem to be normal in terms of position.

Has anyone had problems with the Edge's detachable Springboard slot?

Thanks.

I believe all pins should be the same height.

My Prism had trouble with modules and I could see that several pins had slid down into the Prism. Two were pushed in so far that the soldered connection had cracked. I returned the Prism under warrantee and Handspring repaired it.

If you are past warrantee, you may want to try sliding the pins back in place. The are stiff, but they do move on the Prism (I'm not sure about your Edge module so you may not want to do this). Just don't slide too far or you may break a solder connection and be careful not to bend the pin next to the one you are fixing.

I don't think so, on my Pro the 2 pins in the middle are higher than the rest, and on both sides 2 pins are higher, and just before that, on the second row one pin is lower (again, on both sides).

It's pretty symetrical, as said by sen.

I think you need to have your visor replaced if it's still under warranty. Contact Handspring.

Could you be running any hacks or sotware that might disrupt the springboards?

I agree with Digisane. The pins in my Prism are the same as his.
